Steps:
- Directions: With a sharp knife, cut a thin slice from the bottom of the melon so it sits level. , Place a sheet of waxed paper over the swan pattern and trace with fine-line permanent marker. Cut out pattern. Place pattern on melon so the base of the swan's neck is, at the lower, broader end of melon. Attach pattern to melon with masking tape (see photo 1)., With a sharp knife, trace over the design outline on the rind (the pattern is for the neck, head and sides of swan; the tail is cut without a pattern). After tracing, reverse the pattern. Lay it, on the opposite side of the melon with the base of the neck overlapping the traced neck. Trace only the side wing portion of the pattern (see photo 2). , Mark the ends of the traced lines on each side of the melon with toothpicks. Mark the center of this area with another toothpick. Beginning in the middle and working toward the toothpicks, cut four tall peaks (as shown in photo 3) into the rind to form the tail. Remove the toothpicks after cutting., With knife, retrace designs, cutting deeper into melon. Cut and remove unwanted portions of rind in small sections (see photo 4)., Remove and discard seeds. Scoop out pulp, leaving a 1/2-inch shell. Cut melon into bite-size pieces. Slice the peach., In a large bowl, combine melon, berries and peach slices. Spoon into the swan shell and place on a serving platter. Garnish with, mint and additional strawberries if desired.

This medley of strawberries, melon and pineapple gets its rich sweet taste from a creamy banana dressing. "Drizzle the dressing over any fresh fruit for an eye-appealing salad that's perfect for breakfast or brunch," recommends Edie DeSpain from Logan, Utah.

Steps:
- With a large, sharp knife, remove the top 1/4 section of the watermelon. With a melon baller, scoop flesh from inside of watermelon, removing as many seeds as possible. Leave 1/2 inch of flesh inside the shell of the watermelon. Scoop cantaloupe and honeydew in the same manner, removing as much flesh as possible, and discarding the rinds. Refrigerate fruits separately until ready to assemble.
- In a small saucepan over medium-high heat, bring water and sugar to a boil. Remove from heat, and continue stirring until sugar has completely dissolved. Add lemon zest, and set aside to cool.
- To serve, place watermelon balls, cantaloupe, honeydew, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, and grapes, in a large mixing bowl. Pour syrup over, and toss thoroughly. Transfer mixture to watermelon bowl, and serve. Set aside any fruit mixture that will not fit. There will be enough fruit to refill the bowl.

WATERMELON BASKET FRUIT SALAD
Where I come from a fruit salad is fresh fruit cut up and mixed in a bowl with some colorful berries. When I moved west I had to plan a buffet so I decided to carve a watermelon and asked some of my volunteers to make fruit salad so I could continue filling the watermelon basket with fruit throughout the evening. Well, I got everything but what I thought! I got jello molds, towering quivering things with berries and cool whip all over them; I got a berry and mayonaise and brown sugar concoction, and absolutely nothing I could fill my watermelon with. One of the gals said I should have asked for fresh fruit cut up and on a plate. duh. Now I know. Honestly, I never saw such amazing creations. They were all eaten up and once the watermelon balls were gone I just tossed my carved melon. Wah....

Steps:
- Wash and dry all the fruit.
- With a large veggie peeler/melon carver cut the top third of the watermelon off making a decorative edge of either scallops or peaks. (I wish I had premium so I could post pix). When I was a kid I drew my decorative edge on the melon and carved it with a boning knife but it is faster and easier if you get a tool designed for carving. Scoop the melon out with a small cookie scoop and set aside.
- Cut the cantaloupe into 8ths and cut the rind off. With the french fry blade of your food processor, shred the cantaloupe and set aside. I learned this from Greg Patton host of Pattonly Cooking sponsored by Cuisinart.
- Cut the honeydew in half and seed it. With a melon baller make itty bitty balls and set aside. You can cheat and slice this in your food processer on the thickest blade.
- Cut the pineapple into 8ths and core it. Cut into chunks and set aside.
- Mix melons and pineapples together in a large bowl.
- Quarter the strawberries and mix with the remaining berries and grapes. Do not mix in the raspberries or they will be pulverized.
- Layer the fruits in the watermelon basket, first a layer of the melons and pineapple, then the berries then some raspberries. Save most of the raspberries for the top layer. Continue layering until your melon basket is full and save the remaining fruit in a baggie so you can re-fill the melon basket.
- That's all there is to it! You can carve handles on your basket or leave it open which works better on a buffet as it is easier to access the fruit.
- To make it extra fancy whip up an egg white and dip clusters of grapes in it, then roll in superfine sugar and let dry on waxed paper. Secure the little grape clusters in the edging of the melon basket with a toothpick. I did this for my mother once when she had her lady friends over and it really wowed them as a centerpiece.
- Hope you try this! Have fun doing it with your kids.

Steps:
- First of all make sure your watermelon is ripe. The flesh of the watermelon should have a little give when you press it with your thumb.
- Slicing the watermelon in half is definitely a job for a grown up. My little boy watched in awe as I 'sawed' the very large fruit in half. It was quite hard work cutting the watermelon in half, so make sure you use a sharp knife.
- You only need half of your watermelon. Place the other half in the fridge for another day or perhaps use it to make a thirst-quenching drink or even watermelon ice lollies.
- The next part is so much fun for children. Pass your child a spoon and ask them to help scoop out the pink flesh from the half of the watermelon you are using for your fruit bowl. My son stuffed his face with watermelon as he worked - it was a good job there was so much of it!
- Move the watermelon pieces to a chopping board, then your helper can use a blunt table knife to slice it up into small wedges. They can then move on to the kiwi fruit and strawberries.
- While your child is busy slicing you can use a sharp knife to chop any harder fruit, such as the apples.
- Once all the fruit is prepared, your helper can simply pile all of the fruit back into the bowl. They can do this in layers or mix all the fruit up - they can be as creative as they wish.
- The finished watermelon looks rather elegant but, to make it a little more fun and appealing to children, you can make 'fruit kebabs' by pushing skewers/kebab sticks down into the watermelon and then pushing more fruit down the sticks for an explosion of fruit!

- Place watermelon lengthwise on a cutting board. Slice off a 2-inch chunk from one end of the watermelon and discard. Using the flat end as a base, stand the watermelon up.
- Starting at the tip, begin to cut the watermelon in half, stopping about two-thirds of the way down. (Don't cut all the way to the cutting board.) Make a second cut, starting at one of the end points of the first cut, angling up and moving in a curved line toward the end point on the other side to create a large wedge. Remove the wedge, creating an open mouth for the "shark." Reserve the wedge.
- Using a vegetable peeler, slice off 1-inch-wide pieces of watermelon skin along edges of the mouth. Discard the watermelon skin. Using a small paring knife, cut triangular incisions along the top and bottom edges of the mouth, forming teeth.
- Scoop out the inside of the watermelon, leaving 2 inches at the bottom, to form a bowl. Chop the scooped-out watermelon into chunks and reserve.

- This Watermelon Fruit Basket Is Impressive But Simple. Watermelon fruit bowls are perfect for summer events because they look so beautiful on a barbecue or cookout food spread.
- Make the Bottom Flat. With a large sharp knife, cut a very thin slice from either long side of the melon. Making the bottom flat will allow the melon to sit upright without wobbling.
- Cut off the Top. Place the watermelon on it's cut side. Place the knife about 1 inch to the left of the center and slice the melon completely through.
- Scoop out the Center. Use a melon-baller to remove edible watermelon pulp and reserve for fruit salad or other use. you can also carve out the melon with a regular knife or scoop it out with a spoon.
- Carve the Edge. Carve evenly-spaced V-shaped notches around the top edge of the watermelon bowl. Have them connect to form the zigzag shape at the top.
- Fill Your Bowl. Fill the finished bowl with fruit salad or dip. You can use this method on other melons such as cantaloupe, honeydew, Crenshaw melon, etc.
