Sand all over. First things first, you need to make sure your table is free from scuff, scrapes or rough patches, so use either an orbital sander or medium grit sandpaper to create an all-over smooth effect.
Create a border for your mosaics to sit inside. You’ll need to measure just how far you want the tiles to come out on the table top. Use a pencil and tape measure to mark out the area.
Hammer borders into place. Put the wooden border trimmings in place and then use a nail and hammer to fix them to the table.
Paint. Once the borders are in place it’s time for the paint. Use a self-priming paint and apply a thin, even layer. Leave the first coat to dry, before applying a second.
Start the tiling. While the lacquer is drying, it’s time to focus on the tiling and you can get as creative as you want with this. There are two options - either use whole tiles or to break some up to make a unique moasic border.

Cut out backing material. You need to cut your backing material (in my case aluminium sheet) to size. As my frame is approximately circular we placed it onto the backing material and drew around it (on the inside) with a permanent marker.
Plan the mosaic. Now for the exciting part. You need to plan your mosaic. There are lots of free patterns available on the internet and to start with I used one and traced it onto my aluminium sheet.
Glue the mosaic. Glue down all your tiles one at a time. This sounds really laborious but I actually really enjoyed it. I was completing my planning and creating my design as I went.
Grout the mosaic. Now you need to grout your table top. I used some grout we had left over from another house task but I recommend new. There are lots of tools available to help you grout but I used a trusty old tool we already had.
Clean up the grout. Once the grout is dry clean up any grout that is on the tiles with a scraper and a damp cloth. At this point the tiles will really shine!
