CONEY ISLAND SAUCE

Coney Island Sauce image

This is a recipe from an old family friend who used to own a tasty freeze. I'm adding it because I saw that there was no recipe for coney's on this website and felt that this is a perfect way to start it off. I can still remember my entire family getting excited when my mom used to make it. It's a great summer treat and don't be afraid to make a large batch, because it freezes well. Hope you enjoy

Provided by Wonderbaby254

Categories     Sauces

Time 45m

Yield 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup onion, chopped (I like to save the other half for garnishing)
1 lb hamburger, low fat versions will make the sauce less greasy
1 teaspoon salt (table or sea salt)
2 teaspoons paprika
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 cup ketchup
10 -12 hot dogs
10 -12 buns (white is best for this, but wheat lovers will enjoy this just the same)

Steps:

  • Cook the onions in butter until soft and translucent.
  • Stir in hamburger, salt, paprika and chili powder. Cook this over medium beat until browned.
  • Blend in ketchup and simmer for 20-30 minutes and get all of those flavors happy.
  • Add water by the tablespoons if necessary to thin the mixture.
  • Garnish with left over onion, shredded cheese - I recommend a cheddar blend, and any other hot dog fixings you prefer. Or simply enjoy this coney sauce all by itself. After this, you'll have a hard time returning to chili dogs.

CONEY ISLAND SAUCE

Posted per request. My family loves this sauce on hot dogs. It's very simple to make, and you can make the sauce hotter by adding extra chili powder or by adding crushed or liquid red pepper to the mixture. Also freezes well.

BASIC CONEY SAUCE

Basic Coney Sauce image

A good, tasty coney sauce if you're in a hurry and don't want to deal with a list of obscure ingredients. Enjoy!

Provided by Bone Man

Categories     Sauces

Time 2h10m

Yield 2 quarts

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 lbs ground chuck
2 cups fresh onions, diced
3 tablespoons chili powder
2 cups ketchup
15 ounces tomato sauce
12 ounces beer (not "lite")
1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard

Steps:

  • In a large cooking pot, brown the ground chuck and the onion over medium heat, just until the meat is no longer pink. Pour off the fat as best as you can.
  • Stir in the chili powder and allow to simmer on low heat for about five minutes.
  • Add remaining ingredients and allow to simmer on very low heat, covered, for 2 hours.
  • Serve with onions, mustard, relish, and any kind of hot dogs on steamed buns. I like to toss the hot dogs into the sauce for about ten minutes to cook them.
  • NOTE: A good way to steam hot dog buns is to put 4 or 5 buns into a gallon zip-lock bag, flip in about 2 teaspoons of tap water with your fingers and, (not sealing the bag completely), microwave it on the defrost mode for one minute.
