AIR FRYER TILAPIA FILLETS - BLACKENED AND LIGHTLY BREADED RECIPE



Air Fryer Tilapia Fillets - Blackened and Lightly Breaded Recipe image

The first recipe is for an intensely seasoned blackened tilapia with a cooling mango salsa. The second recipe is for lightly breaded tilapia filets with a super easy tartar sauce.

1/2 mango, peeled and diced into small cubes
1/3 cup peeled, diced cucumber
1-1/2 tsps jalapeno pepper, minced
3 TBS diced red onion
1-1/2 tsps lime juice
3 TBS cilantro leaves, chopped
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper
2 (4 ounce) tilapia filets
1 TBS extra virgin olive oil
1-1/2 TBS smoked paprika
1-1/2 tsps onion powder
1/2 tsp ground thyme
1/2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1/4 tsp garlic powder
2 lemon wedges

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine the diced mango, cucumber, jalapeno, onion, lime juice, cilantro, salt, and pepper. Cover the bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve the tilapia.
  • Rinse the fish filets under cold water and dry them well with paper towels.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the paprika, onion powder, thyme, oregano, cayenne, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Coat the tilapia filets completely with the olive oil. Press equal amounts of the seasoning into all sides of each filet to completely coat. Allow the fish to sit for 15 minutes at room temperature prior to cooking.
  • Set the air fryer to 350°F and 20 minutes. After 5 minutes, place the tilapia in the fryer basket or on the crisper plate. Cook for 6 minutes. Gently flip the filets over and continue to cook for an additional 4 to 6 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F. (If you are afraid the fish will fall apart, don't bother flipping it).
  • Place the rice on a large serving platter. Put the tilapia filets on top of the rice and garnish with the lemon wedges. Serve right away with the mango salsa on the side.

¾ cup panko bread crumbs
¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
¾ tablespoon salt
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 tablespoon milk
4 (4 ounce) tilapia fillets, halved
2 tablespoons canola oil

Steps:

  • Combine panko, parsley, and salt on a dinner plate. Mix egg and milk together in a bowl.
  • Dip fillets into the milk mixture and shake off excess. Lightly dredge in panko mixture.
  • Heat oil in a large, nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add fillets and cook until golden brown on 1 side, about 4 minutes. Turn and cook until fillets are no longer translucent in the center and they easily flake with a fork, about 5 minutes more. Serve immediately.

2 tilapia fillets ((full fillets or 3-4 loins))
2 tablespoons milk or buttermilk
1 egg
½ cup seasoned bread crumbs ((Panko or fine))
2 tablespoons all purpose flour
1 tablespoon freshly grated Parmesan
1 teaspoon seasoning salt ((reduce to ½ teaspoon if you prefer less salty))
½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon paprika
⅛ teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat air fryer to 400 degrees according to manufacturer directions.
  • Pat tilapia dry with paper towel to remove any excess moisture.
  • Whisk together milk and egg in a wide shallow dish.
  • Combine coating in a large glass dish (big enough so that the dish can lay flat): bread crumbs, flour, Parmesan, seasoning salt, Italian seasoning, salt, garlic powder, paprika and pepper.
  • Coat tilapia in milk mixture and press firmly into the coating mixture, coating both sides well.
  • Open air fryer and brush basket with oil. Place tilapia in the basket (if you like, you can line the basket with parchment so they are easier to remove later). Spray top of tilapia with oil spray.
  • Cook for 8-10 minutes, until golden brown and fish flakes easily with a fork. If desired, you can flip the tilapia half way for more even browning, but remember that fish can be delicate.

½ lb tilapia filets (skinless (2 small filets))
½ tsp avocado oil spray
¼ tsp salt
3 tbsp panko breadcrumbs
3 tbsp parmesan cheese
¼ tsp Italian seasoning
¼ tsp paprika
¼ tsp pepper
¼ tsp garlic powder
lemon juice ((optional, to taste))

Steps:

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Meanwhile, pat each tilapia filet dry with a paper towel, then spray with avocado oil spray and sprinkle with salt.
  • Mix panko breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, paprika, pepper, and garlic powder in a shallow dish. Place each tilapia filet in the dish and coat with breading. (You most likely won't use up all of the breading.)
  • (This is where the magic happens.) Place the breaded filets on a sheet of parchment paper. Lay another piece of parchment paper on top. Use a rolling pin to gently roll over the filets and press the breading into the fish. This step helps the breading adhere to the fish for maximum crispiness!
  • Add the tilapia to the preheated air fryer and cook for 7 minutes (or until the fish reaches 145°F).
  • Serve immediately with your favorite side dishes and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice!
