He was orphaned as a teen. Little is known about Billy the Kid’s early days, but he was most likely born Henry McCarty in the Irish slums of New York City sometime in late 1859.
The Kid’s first arrest came for stealing clothes from a laundry. Henry McCarty’s first run-in with the law came in 1875, when he assisted a local street tough known as “Sombrero Jack” in stealing clothing from a Chinese laundry.
He played a prominent role in a frontier feud. Billy the Kid first earned his reputation as a gunslinger in 1878, when he participated in a bloody frontier war in Lincoln County, New Mexico.
The Kid never robbed a train or a bank. Unlike other Old West outlaws such as Jesse James, Cole Younger or Butch Cassidy, Billy the Kid didn’t make his living as a bandit.
He was involved in at least nine murders. The Kid was known for his easygoing personality, but he wasn’t afraid to draw his six-shooter when provoked.
The Kid made a famous jailbreak. In late 1880, Lincoln County Sheriff Pat Garrett tracked the Kid to a cabin in Stinking Springs, New Mexico, and forced his surrender.
He was just 21 years old at the time of his death. After his escape from death row, the Kid spent several months hiding out on the frontier and taking refuge with sympathetic locals in Fort Sumner, New Mexico.
Some believe the Kid wasn’t killed in 1881. Pat Garrett became an Old West legend for killing Billy the Kid, yet as the years passed, rumors circulated that the Sheriff had either shot the wrong man or helped fake the outlaw’s death.
He’s been the subject of more than 50 movies. The Kid was a celebrity in his own time, but his legend only grew after his death thanks to dime novels, television shows and Hollywood films.

His father was a hemp farmer and Baptist minister. He left home when Jesse was very young to minister to gold seekers out West and died of cholera while there.
Residing in Missouri, the James family owned slaves and supported the Confederacy.
When Jesse was about 15, Union soldiers seeking information attacked the James household, hanging Jesse’s stepfather from a tree (he survived, but with mental damage) and roughing up young Jesse.
Before he even became an outlaw, Jesse was shot in the chest on two separate occasions. Once in 1864 while trying to steal a saddle from a farmer and once the following year by Union soldiers.
Jesse and other guerrillas might have slaughtered and scalped unarmed Union soldiers. Some say yes, some say no.
Jesse was a cousin kisser. He married his first cousin Zerelda “Zee” Mimms (who was named after Jesse’s mother).
His nickname was “Dingus”. He reportedly earned the nickname after shooting off the tip of his finger while cleaning a pistol. Because he didn’t like to curse, he said “That’s the dod-dingus pistol I ever saw”.
The James gang’s “Robin Hood” image was carefully crafted with the help of editor John Newman Edwards. He would write favorable news articles with gems such as “[the James gang are] men who might have sat with Arthur at the Round Table, ridden in tourney with Sir Lancelot, or won the colors of Guinevere” (Kansas City Times, 29 Sept.
Jesse loved publicity, and was even known to hand out “press releases” to witnesses at the scenes of his crimes. One, which exaggerates Jesse’s height, is said to have read: “The most daring robbery on record.
Despite the Robin Hood image of stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, there is no evidence that Jesse and his gang ever did so. Evidence suggests they kept all of their spoils for themselves.
