Irish Whiskey Soda Bread with Irish Whiskey Butter image

A delicious soda bread served with whiskey butter

Provided by Michelle

Categories     Bread

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup raisins
1 cup Irish whiskey
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
¾ teaspoon salt
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
¾ cup + 1 tablespoon buttermilk
9 tablespoons unsalted butter (softened)
3 tablespoons Irish whiskey (reserved from soaking the raisins)
1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
  • Combine the raisins and whiskey in a small saucepan. Place over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Once it reaches a simmer, remove from heat, cover, and steep for at least 1 hour. When finished, drain the raisins and reserve the whiskey to use in the whiskey butter.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flours, baking soda, and salt. Use a pastry blender or your finger tips to blend the butter into the flour mixture until coarse crumbs are formed. Most of the butter should be about the size of small peas, with a few larger pieces throughout. Stir in the whiskey-soaked raisins. With a wooden spoon, stir in the buttermilk just until the dry ingredients are moistened and the dough comes together.
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured counter and knead lightly until the dough is smooth, but still slightly sticky. Use as little extra flour as necessary to knead the dough.
  • Pat the dough into a 6-inch circle. Place the dough circle onto the prepared baking sheet and score the top of the dough ½-inch deep to form a cross.
  • Bake for 30 minutes, or until an instant-read thermometer reads 190 degrees F in the center of the loaf. Remove to a cooling rack. If you plan to serve the bread warm, you can cover it with a towel to keep it warm. Any leftover bread can be wrapped in plastic wrap and stored at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • While the bread bakes, prepare the Irish Whiskey Butter. Microwave the whiskey and sugar together for 20 seconds, and then allow to cool to room temperature. Place the softened butter in a medium bowl, and beat in the whiskey mixture a little at a time, until completely incorporated. You can place the butter in an airtight container or wrap into a log with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

IRISH WHISKEY SODA BREAD

Irish Whiskey Soda Bread image

I got this recipe from my friend Sue - it is the best Irish Soda Bread I have tasted and this is now my go to recipe! Great as an accompaniment to soups or stews. Very easy to make - serve warm with lots of butter!

Provided by Steph in Ottawa

Categories     Quick Breads

Time 50m

Yield 2 Loaves, 8-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup butter, chilled and cut in small cubes
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
1/4 cup liquid honey
1/4 cup Irish whiskey or 1/4 cup buttermilk
2 teaspoons Irish whiskey
2 teaspoons milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF.
  • Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, or lightly grease.
  • Combine flour, salt and baking soda in a bowl.
  • With a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a small bowl or 2 cup measure, mix buttermilk, honey & whiskey.
  • Add all at once to dry mixture and stir just until no dry spots remain.
  • Turn onto lightly floured surface and knead for 1 minute (too much will toughen and too little will inhibit rising).
  • Divide dough in half and shape into round loaves.
  • Place on cookie sheet. With a floured knife cut a cross 1/2 inch deep in each loaf.
  • In small cup, combine whiskey and milk.
  • Brush loaves with glaze.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes or until loaves sound hollow when tapped on bottoms. Remove from pans and let cool on wire racks.
  • Cut into wedges or slices and serve warm.

31 IRISH FOOD AND DRINK YOU MUST TRY | RABBIE'S TRAVELFEELS

From rabbies.com
  • Colcannon. This hearty Irish dish is a mix of potatoes, cabbage or kale, a slab of butter, and spring onions. It’s as simple as it is epic, and there’s even a song about it.
  • Champ. Potatoes are still a staple in the Irish diet. They are filling, available in every shop, and you can make them as fancy or as simple as you want.
  • Irish Stew. Nothing will keep you as warm and happy inside as legendary Irish stew. This one-pot wonder is traditionally made with mutton/lamb or beef, vegetables (like potatoes, onions and carrots) and a lot of patience.
  • Lamb. Ireland is full of lush green pastures which are perfect for sheep-breeding. So, it’s not a surprise that Irish lamb is known as a delicacy, especially if it comes from Connemara and County Kerry.
  • Full Irish Breakfast. Ireland is known for veeeryyy filling breakfast. Such a morning feast is perfect if you have a busy day ahead, or you’ve had a late night working on your jigs.
  • Potato Farl/Potato Cake/Potato Bread. The Irish can make more things out of potatoes than you’ve had dinners in your life. So, while in Ireland you have to try another potato invention: potato bread/potato cake/potato farl.
  • Black and White Pudding. Some of the best recipes are the result of people’s creativity and limited resources, just like black and white pudding, the stars of the full Irish breakfast.
  • Boxty. Another incarnation of the most versatile vegetable in Ireland. Known as potato dumpling or potato pancake, boxty can be prepared in many ways and can be teamed with almost anything.
  • Battered Sausage. Everything tastes better when you cover it in batter and deep fry, right? Even a sausage. So, if you want to understand the Irish passion for frying in batter, visit a local chipper (a fish and chips shop) and get a deep-fried sausage.
  • Fish Supper. Just like in the UK, fish supper or fish and chips is the old-time favourite you can find in Irish pubs and local takeaways (chippers). Its secret lies in fresh fish, high quality potatoes and a perfect batter mix.
