Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Prepare 8 inch cake pan and proceed as usual.
- Mix first three ingredients together and let cool completely.
- Add walnuts, cake flour and baking powder and stir gently.
- Add butter sugar, salt and.
- egg.
- Stir completely and bake in prepared pan until tester comes out clean.
- Topping: Cook until syrupy and spread on warm cake.
- Serve cooled topped.
- with fresh whipped cream, if desired.

Steps:
- Combine dates and water in a small saucepan. Bring water to a boil; simmer 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Stir in honey, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nuts. Remove from heat.
- Preheat oven to 400ºF. Butter a round 8-1/2" cake pan; sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
- In a large bowl, combine semolina (or farina, or Cream of Wheat), flour, baking powder and sugar. Sprinkle vanilla over the mixture. Stir in butter.
- Spoon half of the mixture into the buttered cake pan; press over bottom and up side of pan. Spoon date mixture evenly over the top. Sprinkle the remaining flour mixture over the date mixture.
- Bake in center of the oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool, then slice.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350F and grease and flour a 8" or 9" square pan.
- In a large bowl, combine dates, walnuts and other dry ingredients.
- In a small bowl, mix water, butter and vanilla.
- Add water mixture to date mixture and mix until just moistened.
- Pour batter into prepared pan and cake for 30-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Serve warm or cold; plain or topped with whipped cream.

Posted for the Zaar World Tour 2006-Algeria. From the "Best of International Cooking" cookbook. I have not had the opportunity to try this recipe yet. UPDATE--I am posting this suggestion from a reviewer for making the preparation much easier: pulse the almonds and sugar in a food processor, then pulse in the cornstarch and whole pitted dates. The dates chop up perfectly and the ground almonds/sugar/corn starch keeps the date pieces from sticking to each other.

Steps:
- Butter a round 10-inch cake pan; line with waxed paper. Butter waxed paper; set pan aside. Preheat oven to 400ºF.
- In a blender, process almonds with 3/4 cup sugar until finely ground.
- In a large bowl, beat egg yolks with remaining 1/4 cup sugar and vanilla. Stir in almond mixture, cornstarch, dates, butter and orange juice or liqueur.
- In a medium bowl, beat egg whites until stiff; fold into date mixture. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in center of oven 30 to 40 minutes or until center springs back when lightly pressed with your fingers. Invert onto a rack; remove from pan. Cool on rack.

- Mix nuts, dates and cherries in a large bowl.
- Combine flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder.
- Sprinkle flour mixture over fruit; mix well.
- Add beaten eggs and vanilla.
- Mix throughly.
- Bake in tube pan at 275 degrees fahrenheit for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Bottom and top crust is made from either semolina, farina or cream of wheat cereal and filled in the middle with dates, walnuts, honey, lemon, cinnamon and chopped dates.
