IOWA SLOPPY JOE DIP

Iowa Sloppy Joe Dip image

Legend has it that the Sloppy Joe was first created in Sioux City, Iowa in 1930 by a cook named Joe. We think Joe would love this creamy, cheesy, game day dip! Season ground beef with McCormick® Sloppy Joes Seasoning Mix for authentic flavor. Add cream cheese, tomato sauce, onions, and Cheddar Jack cheese to beef. Bake until ooey-gooey and garnish with dill pickle slices. Tangy, sweet and savory, it's best enjoyed loaded on top of potato chips.

Categories     Main Course

Number Of Ingredients 18

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound lean ground beef
1 small onion, (finely diced)
1 green pepper, (diced)
4 cloves garlic, (minced)
1 cup reduced sodium beef broth
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 ½ teaspoons beef bouillon
2 tablespoons ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 tsp EACH dried oregano, dried parsley
½ tsp EACH salt, pepper, dried basil, paprika
¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, (more or less to taste)
3/4 cup freshly grated sharp cheddar cheese
6 brioche hamburger buns
softened butter or mayo for brushing ((optional))
6 slices provolone cheese

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Split buns and lay them cut side up on a large baking tray (15x21). Lightly brush the cut sides with softened butter or mayonnaise (optional for crispier/more flavorful buns). Bake for 5 minutes to toast the buns. Meanwhile you can continue with the recipe:
  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add beef, onions and bell peppers and cook until beef is browned and onions are softened, about 7 minutes. Add garlic, and sauté 30 seconds.
  • In a liquid measuring cup (or small bowl), whisk the beef broth, cornstarch and beef bouillon together until smooth. Add to the meat mixture followed by the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon and all seasonings.
  • Gently simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has been absorbed, but the mixture is still a little saucy, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the sharp cheddar cheese until melted. Taste and season with salt, pepper, red pepper flakes to taste (I like more salt). Keep in mind the flavors will be diluted with the cheese and buns.
  • Divide mixture between the bottom toasted buns and top each with a slice of provolone cheese. Bake (leaving both top and bottoms cut side up) at 400 degrees F for 5-10 minutes or until cheese is completely melted. Top the sandwiches and serve immediately.

MOMMA'S SLOPPY JOES

Momma's Sloppy Joes image

My mom has been making this basic sloppy joe recipe for so long that when I asked her how she made them, she had to make a batch to be sure of the measurements. These are no fancy joes - nothing but lots of sloppy, zesty mess! Beef may be used instead of turkey. Perfect for potluck or game day. Serve on your favorite buns.

  • In a large skillet melt butter and olive oil on medium high, then add onion garlic and red pepper and saute until softened for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the ground beef, salt pepper, cayenne, chili powder, brown sugar, mustard, 2 tablespoons of the ketchup and the tomato paste cook until meat is browned about 15 minutes. Use a spatula to break up the meat while its browning so the meat pieces are very small.
  • If the meat releases a bunch of oil, carefully use a crumbled up paper towel in the bottom of the pan and using the utensil you are breaking up the meat with to blot away any excess grease. I'll repeat this if the towel becomes saturated.

This dip can also be made in the slow cooker. You will add the cooked sloppy joe mixture to a slow cooker and top with the cheddar cheese and set to warm. Once the cheese has melted it's ready. You won't get the crunchy cheese from the broiler, but it's still just as good! Leftovers can also be reheated and eaten on hamburger buns as sandwiches.
