10 TIPS FOR CHOOSING AN INSPIRING INTRANET NAME (+EXAMPLES)

Author Milton Herman
  • Reach out to your employees. A good practice is to include employees in the naming process. You can organize brainstorm groups at different stages in order to narrow down your intranet name options.
  • Keep it short and simple. A secret to avoid long and confusing names is actually to avoid over-complicating the process itself. The name should ideally be short and commonly-used in the company.
  • Easy to spell and remember. Make sure that your intranet name doesn’t bring a headache to employees every time they try to spell it. Your intranet portal is the everyday communication channel and internal employee network, so give them something easy to remember and use in daily conversations.
  • Multicultural. Another important element to consider is your company’s internationalization level. If you are operating in a multinational corporation, you need to account for cultural and language differences.
  • Inspired from your values. You can get inspiration from your external brand tagline or your internal values. If your company has well known brand slogans in the style of “Just Do It” (Nike), “Think Different” (Apple) or “The World On Time” (FedEx), use it to your advantage.
  • Inspired from a company symbol. The name can be inspired by your industry or a distinct company symbol such as a logo or another branding element. Any existing iconography can serve as an inspiration and brings an added value to the intranet as it’s reflecting its nature and goals.
  • Create a mascot. Another way to ensure your intranet name keeps the attention of employees is by creating a named mascot that typifies the employee experience — a “Joe Six Pack” custom to your brand.
  • Try word play. If a direct link to your company name or industry is not really bringing any fruitful results, you can always consult a thesaurus or play with alliteration or puns.
  • Not too techy. Nowadays, modern cloud-based intranets don’t require a degree in computer science. They can be deployed and operated by any department inside your company.
  • Make it stick. People tend to give nicknames to everything. If you fail to provide a good intranet name, sooner or later your employees will find a more suitable nickname, which you may not necessarily like.

  • Involve key employees in product evaluation. Include employees in early intranet discussions and learn how your new intranet software can help them.
  • Encourage employees to participate in intranet research. Employee feedback is essential to designing a useful, usable intranet. Get employees to participate in card sorting and task testing activities for your new intranet.
  • Give employees a say in your intranet name. What’s in an intranet name? Well, if one person determines the name, not so much. But, if you run an exercise that allows all employees to suggest and vote on names for the intranet, then the name will be exciting and engaging.
  • Send out postcard teasers of your intranet launch. One of our customers distributed postcards to every employee prior to their launch. The postcards said “Take me home with you!”
  • Share fun facts from employee profiles. Penn State had a brilliant intranet launch plan that sparked a lot of excitement. One aspect of launch included a series posters that shared little-known tidbits about Penn State employees.
  • Distribute intranet launch welcome packages. Tangible hard copy materials are so retro, they are almost cool again. Another piece of Penn State’s outstanding intranet launch campaign was welcome packages assembled by a team of volunteers.
  • Give your intranet a strong visual identity. Mavtek recently won a ThoughtFarmer award for best looking intranet. Their fun intranet brand started with a clever name that tied into their company culture and extended to every page of the intranet, including their support screen.
  • Help super users create example profiles. By having a few engaged users (hopefully tech-savvy executives) fill out their profiles as examples, you can achieve two things.
  • Pre-populate employee profile photos. If you have a database of security badge photos or some other repository of staff photos, consider uploading them to user profiles in advance.
  • Set up major groups and locations in advance. Your new intranet will likely have group pages for each department and company location. By adding employees to the proper group pages ahead of time you can
