HOW TO FREEZE FRESH PICKED BLUEBERRIES

HOW TO FREEZE FRESH PICKED BLUEBERRIES image

I have blueberry bushes and it's enjoyable to watch them get ripe. When I go to pick them it's too tempting not to eat some right from the tree. Blueberries stay pretty free from insects, birds will steal a few so I pick the deep blue ones everyday. They get sweeter left on the tree longer. If I'm planning to freeze them I let them sit in an open weaved basket in the indirect sunlight 2-3 days prior to freezing.

- blueberries, any amount you have picked and plan to freeze

Steps:

  • DO NOT WASH BLUEBERRIES PRIOR TO FREEZING !!!
  • Simply place in freezer, using zip top plastic bags, do not over fill. Zip almost closed then gently press excessive air from the bag, finish zipping bag, and lay flat. Store in single file in freezer. Once they freeze you can stack 2-3 bags (maybe more if you have a lot of berries).
  • Remove just the amount your recipe calls for from the bag. Place in strainer and wash with cold water. Spread out on a clean cookie sheet so the ice cold berries are not stacked up. Give them a few minutes to thaw then use in recipe as directed.

  • Freeze Them Clean. When I’m in a hurry, freezing is usually my first option. I actually used this method a lot over the past few weeks. So you’ll complete this method by washing your blueberries.
  • Freeze Them Dirty. My mom and I live about 400 miles apart. Though we don’t see each other every day, I try my best to call her every day. Well, we were talking one day when I was preserving all of our blueberries, and she was telling me how she had spoken to one of her friends, and they told her how I could freeze my blueberries as is.
  • Blueberry Syrup. We have some good friends that come over to pick our blueberries from time to time. They do this because they love blueberry syrup. So every time they get blueberries, they immediately turn it into a delicious syrup.
  • Blueberry Vinegar. If you love to cook with vinegar or make your own homemade salad dressings, then you’ll probably love this recipe for blueberry infused vinegar.
  • Dehydrate Your Berries. I love the option of dehydrating blueberries because it requires very little to do it. You’ll just need a dehydrator. Then you’ll wash your blueberries and place them on the appropriate dehydrating trays.
  • Blueberry Jam. I love jam! That is actually probably an understatement, but I can’t help but think how amazing it is. I love the flavor, the texture, and the sweetness of it.
  • Can Your Blueberries Whole. If you like to keep your blueberries around in a whole form so you can turn them into blueberry pie filling later on when you have more time, then you’ll like this option.
  • Freeze Drying Your Blueberries. There are multiple different methods to freeze drying blueberries. You can freeze dry them in a freezer, using dry ice, or by using a vacuum chamber.
