This Hot Buttered Bourbon is the ultimate warm winter drink. You could serve this as a Christmas cocktail, or over New Year to welcome guests in from the cold. It is so easy to make, with the rich taste of brown sugar. Serve it with or without whipped cream.

1 stick butter
pinch of cinnamon
small grating of nutmeg
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup bourbon
1/2 cup just off boiling water

Steps:

  • Place the butter, cinnamon and a small grating of nutmeg in a small saucepan.
  • Add in the sugar and stir gently until the sugar dissolves into the butter.
  • Remove from the heat and pour in the whiskey and hot water.
  • Serve immediately.

1 1/2 cups apple cider or 1 1/2 cups water, plus
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoon allspice berry
1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
3/4 cup Bourbon
8 tablespoons salted butter, at room temperature
1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon confectioners' sugar (icing sugar)

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, combine the cider, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and ginger and place over low heat.
  • Cook at a simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the bourbon and bring back to a simmer; immediately remove from the heat.
  • Pour into 2 warmed mugs and top each with a slice of Nutmeg Butter.
  • NUTMEG BUTTER (makes about 16 servings):.
  • Put all ingredients in a small bowl and stir with a rubber spatula to combine.
  • Place the butter mixture on a sheet of wax paper or plastic wrap and shape into a log about the size of the original stick of butter.
  • Chill in the freezer for about 30 minutes, until firm but not frozen hard.
  • Slice into 1/4-inch rounds (about 1/2 teaspoon) to use in buttered drinks.
  • The butter will keep, frozen and tightly wrapped for at least a month; let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before slicing it. It will keep in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks.

  • Place butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
  • Heat, stirring occasionally, until butter is melted.
  • Remove from heat and stir in bourbon and hot water.
  • Pour into glasses and serve.

4 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, chilled
3/4 cup Bourbon
2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
ground nutmeg

Steps:

  • Bring the first 5 ingredients to a simmer in a medium saucepan. Remove from heat; cover and let steep for about 5 minutes.
  • Add 2 T. chilled butter to saucepan; bring to a simmer. Remove from heat.
  • Stir in bourbon and lemon juice. Strain into a large measuring cup.
  • Divide hot cider among 4 mugs. Cut 1 T. butter into 4 pieces. Add 1 piece to each mug. Sprinkle nutmeg over.
