Time 35m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 19

⅓ cup raw honey
3 tablespoons tomato paste
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
½ cup cold water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
½ teaspoon salt
1 ¼ teaspoons salt, divided
¾ teaspoon garlic powder, divided
1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 egg
¾ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup cold water
½ cup cornstarch
2 tablespoons avocado oil
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
peanut oil for frying
½ tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

Steps:

  • Mix honey, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, Sriracha sauce, and sesame oil together in a medium bowl.
  • Combine cold water, cornstarch, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a bowl; mix well. Add to honey sauce mixture and mix well. Set aside until needed.
  • Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder over chicken.
  • Whisk egg in a large bowl. Add remaining salt and garlic powder and mix well. Mix in flour. Combine water and cornstarch in a bowl; add to egg mixture and mix well. Add avocado oil and baking powder; mix well.
  • Pour 3 inches of peanut oil into the bottom of a wide, deep pot and heat to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  • Place 1/2 of the chicken pieces into the batter mixture and turn to coat. Scoop tablespoonfuls of chicken and batter into the hot oil. Do not crowd the chicken. Fry in batches until chicken pieces are golden brown and no longer pink in the centers, about 1 minute per side. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Check oil temperature between batches.
  • Pour honey sauce mixture into a large skillet. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, 3 to 4 minutes. Add all chicken pieces to the sauce; turn to coat. Sprinkle on sesame seeds.

Skip the take-out and try this easy homemade version instead - it's unbelievably crisp-tender and packed with so much flavor!

Provided by Chungah Rhee

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
1/2 teaspoon sesame seeds
2 green onions, thinly sliced
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons ketchup

To make the sauce, whisk together honey, soy sauce, ketchup, garlic, brown sugar, rice wine vinegar, ginger, Sriracha, sesame oil, cornstarch and pepper in a small bowl; set aside. Melt butter in a large oven-proof skillet over medium high heat. Add chicken, skin-side down, and sear both sides until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side. Stir in honey mixture. Place into oven and roast until completely cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 175 degrees F, about 25-30 minutes. Then broil for 2-3 minutes, or until caramelized and slightly charred. Serve immediately, garnished with sesame seeds and green onions, if desired.

HEALTHIER HONEY-SESAME CHICKEN

Healthier Honey-Sesame Chicken image

This is a 'healthier' version of honey-sesame chicken. It is baked instead of fried and the chicken is not battered, making it healthier. All the flavors are here and the only thing sacrificed are the calories! Serve over rice with additional sauce on the side.

OVEN-BAKED HONEY SESAME CHICKEN

Oven-Baked Honey Sesame Chicken image

This oven-baked sesame chicken comes together quick and is always a big hit! Serve it up on top of rice with some garlic-almond green beans on the side, and you've got yourself a better (and healthier!!) than take-out meal! This pairs perfectly with a dry Riesling from Washington state.

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 13

FOR THE CHICKEN:
1 lb chicken breasts, cubed
salt and pepper
1 c cornstarch
1-2 Tbsp vegetable oil
FOR THE SAUCE:
1/4 c honey
2 Tbsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp rice wine vinegar
1 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
2 Tbsp low sodium soy sauce
GARNISH:
toasted sesame seeds

Steps:

  • 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • 2. Lightly salt and pepper the cubed chicken. Put the cornstarch into a gallon zip top bag. Dump chicken in with the cornstarch. Seal the bag and shake vigorously to ensure that the chicken is well coated. Dump chicken and cornstarch into a colander over garbage can, shake excess cornstarch off the chicken.
  • 3. Heat 1 TB of the oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Working in batches so as not to overcrowd the pan, cook the chicken until browned on all sides. Place cooked chicken on a large, rectangular, parchment paper-lined baking pan.
  • 4. In a small/medium bowl, whisk all ingredients for sauce together until well blended. Pour sauce over chicken and stir to make sure every piece is coated.
  • 5. Bake for 15 minutes or until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is completely cooked. While chicken is in the oven, stir it every 5-10 minutes to make sure chicken is completely coated with sauce.
  • 6. Serve chicken over jasmine rice and garnish with sesame seeds.

SESAME CHICKEN

Sesame Chicken image

This recipe really satisfies my craving for Chinese food. I serve it over rice with a side of steamed vegetables. The sauce makes just enough to glaze the chicken. I usually double or even triple the sauce recipe to have enough to pour over our rice and veggies. It is a nice low-fat alternative to the restaurant-style Sesame Chicken.

Categories     Chicken

Time 25m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

6 boneless skinless chicken breast halves, pat dry with paper towels
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup low sodium soy sauce
1 cup water
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/2-1 teaspoon ground ginger (fresh is better)
1/2-1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

Steps:

  • Cut chicken breast into 1 inch strips or bite size pieces.
  • Heat a large non-stick skillet that has been sprayed with Pam, over medium-high heat.
  • Cook chicken for about 6 minutes or until no longer pink.
  • Mix together honey, soy sauce, water, corn starch, ginger and red pepper flakes.
  • Whisk until no corn starch lumps appear.
  • Pour sauce mixture into skillet with chicken.
  • Cook until sauce thickens slightly.
  • You can add more water if sauce is too thick.
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  • Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until chicken starts to soak up the sauce.
  • Note: Since originally posting this recipe, I have tried some of the suggestions others have made. I do like it with a bit of sesame oil (be careful not to get too much, just a few drops at the end of cooking is good enough for me, but you might like more), fresh ginger is also good if you have it on hand. I have tried it with garlic and it is good that way also. I have also found that it is good with shrimp and pork. Basically what I am trying to say is, the original recipe is just a simple, quick and healthy meal I came up with when I was craving Chinese food. I thought it turned out really great and wanted to share it. I'm happy that so many of you have enjoyed it. For those of you that didn't care for it, I hope you can find one that suits your fancy some where else.

ROAST HONEY SESAME CHICKEN

Roast Honey Sesame Chicken image

This recipes sounds so good and the photo in Recipe+ magazine make look even better. Times are estimated and DO NOT included 20 minutes marinating time. They also suggest that you can replace hoisin sauce with plum sauce. You could also use 2 small twin pack chicken but cooking time will vary. For a quick gravy you could mix powdered gravy with boiling water and minced garlic cloves. If dutch carrots are not available use regular carrots and cut into quarters lenghtwise.
