SUE'S HOMEMADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT

Sue's Homemade Laundry Detergent image

I was given this recipe by a customer where I work. This is very easy to make and you'll love the cost. Broken down (approximately) $7.86 Arm and Hammer Detergent(7.94 lbs), $4.19 20 Mule team borax(76 oz), .72 bar of Ivory, $1.19 bar of Fels. The cost of a bucket of soap is approximately $1.84!!! Also it smells great. Hint- putting soap in freezer for about an hour makes it much easier to grate.

Time 40m

Yield 15 about 15 5 gallon buckets

Number Of Ingredients 9

arm and hammer laundry detergent (7.94 lbs)
20 mule team borax (76 oz)
soap bar (1 Ivory 4.5 oz bar)
soap bar (1 Fels Naptha 5 1/2 oz bar)
1 soap bar (Ivory, grated)
1/2 soap bar (Fels Naptha, grated)
1 cup laundry detergent (use Arm and Hammer)
1 cup borax (use 20-Mule Team)
4 cups boiling water

Steps:

  • The first 4 ingredients are what you need to buy. The next 5 are to make the actual recipe.
  • Dissolve soaps and detergent in 5 gallon bucket with 4 cups of boiling water.( I used the paint stirrer and drill for this the 2nd time I made it, it dissolved the ingredients much better than by hand).
  • Once dissolved add another 4 cups of very hot water.
  • Stir well and add enough water to fill 5 gallon bucket to the top.
  • Let sit overnight. Soap will gel up and you will need to stir completely with your hand or use a paint stirrer on the end of a drill. You can fill empty laundry bottles or keep in bucket with a cover.
  • 1 - 5 gallon bucket will make about 80 loads of detergent.
  • ( A little extra math- 1 box of Arm and Hammer, 2 boxes of 20-Mule Team, 15 bars of Ivory and 8 bars of Fels will make about 1200 loads of laundry for about $35.96).
  • Also I bought an inexpensive grater just for the soap. It was suggested to use a food processor but I didn't like doing that.

HOMEMADE LAUNDRY DETERGENT TABS

Homemade Laundry Detergent Tabs image

This is my favorite detergent recipe so far. I made this when it wasn't sunny outside, and they still set up. I also made homemade washing soda by putting a thick layer in the oven for an hour at 400. Super excited to not buy washing soda.

Provided by AmyZoe

Categories     < 15 Mins

Time 15m

Yield 15-20 tabs, 15-20 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 ounces bar castille soap
1/4 cup baking soda
1/2 cup washing soda
1/4 cup salt
1/4-1/2 cup white vinegar
5 -10 drops essential oils (6 drops of lavender and 2 drops of tangerine or your personal preference)

Steps:

  • Grate a bar of soap (can also shred in food processor).
  • Mix the grated soap, baking soda, washing soda, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Slowly add the vinegar a little at a time and mix until it starts to clump and is easy to manipulate.
  • Press into ice cube trays (really press hard).
  • Set the trays out to dry in a sunny place for at least 24 hours.
  • When you use the tabs, add them in with the load and not in the separate area for detergent if your machine has one. They won't dissolve properly without enough water.

  • DIY Powdered Soap Nuts. This recipes from Eco-Friendly Family looks phenomenal. I have tried soap nuts a few times and still have some leftover from my last Jenuinely Pure review.
  • No-Grate Homemade Laundry Detergent. This detergent sounds like a detergent after my own heart! One reason I’ve never delved into making my own homemade laundry detergent was the grating.
  • Easy Homemade Laundry Detergent. This one had me at “easy.” But, it does require some soap grating. However, the blogger does make it look not very hard at all–with the use of a food processor.
  • Homemade Liquid Soap Nuts. As it suggests, this homemade detergent also uses the perfectly natural soap nuts as its base! Although I believe powdered detergent dissolves better when washing cloth diapers, I actually prefer using a liquid detergent to wash clothes.
  • Homemade Castile Laundry Detergent. Here’s another liquid laundry detergent. This one doesn’t require any grating and uses one of my favorite green cleaners–Castile soap!
