NATURAL DRAIN UNCLOGGER
Based on a recipe from my Shaw's grocery store's Wild Harvest November 2009 holiday pamphlet. It says, "Along with potato peels and onion skins often comes a clogged sink. Thankfully, there is a way to unclog sinks without sending toxic chemicals down the drain and out into the environment." Cook time is boiling water time. I can honestly say that I use this regularly in my kitchen sink and it works as well for me as Draino did.

Steps:
- Clean any debris from sink.
- Boil a gallon of water. Slowly, pour this down the drain. For minor clogs, this may do the trick. If not, continue with next steps.
- Pour baking soda down the drain. Immediately follow this with the vinegar. The interaction between the two should be enough to break up the clog.
- Allow the sink to "rest" in this state for 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil.
- Pour two quarts of the boiling water down the drain after the 15-20 minutes, to rinse away the vinegar, baking soda and clogging debris.
- Place the cup plunger over the sink drain and plunge to thoroughly dislodge the clogging materials.
- Finish by pouring two more quarts of boiling water down the drain.

9 POWERFUL WAYS TO UNCLOG A DRAIN NATURALLY: BEST …

- Baking Soda and Vinegar. This one is probably the most popular home remedy you can find to unclog a drain naturally (and on the cheap). In most cases, it can work wonders, however, it’s important to apply it properly otherwise you won’t go far with it.
- Dish Detergent and Hot Water. This homemade cleaner is highly effective against clogs that contain mostly grease or oily substances, therefore you can expect the best results if you use it on kitchen sinks.
- Salt and Baking Soda. This combination is one of my favorite natural drain uncloggers. It has helped me and many friends of mine to clean an obstructed kitchen or bathroom sink pipe.
- Vinegar and Salt. This is another powerful combination: the acidic vinegar works great together with the salt. The synergistic effect between them will remove most types of blockage in a drainage system.
- Cream of Tartar, Salt, and Baking Soda. Slow draining sinks can be easily cleaned by using these natural ingredients. Also, you can use this recipe to prevent clogs: apply the mixture once every two weeks and your drains will remain free of gunk and bad smells.

- Clear Any Standing Water. If your sink (or tub or shower) is full of backed-up water, bail out as much of the water as you can by using a cup and dumping the water into a bucket.
- Pour in Boiling Water. If you're working on a sink or tub drain, first remove the sink pop-up stopper or the tub stopper to gain better access to the drain.
- Cover the Drain. Cover the drain with a stopper, if available, and let the mixture work for 10 minutes. The baking soda and vinegar will fizz and bubble a lot; covering the drain forces the reaction downward instead of up and out of the drain, but it's not critical that you cover the drain.
- Add More Boiling Water. Pour another pot of boiling water into the drain. This will help wash away any clogs that the baking soda and vinegar loosened up.
- Clear the Drain. Flush the drain with hot water from the tap to help remove any remaining debris from the drain pipe.
- Repeat as Needed. It can take a few tries with this low-cost, eco-friendly drain cleaner to completely clear your drain, particularly if your drain is especially slow or clogged.

- Freshen drains with baking soda and vinegar. Baking soda and vinegar are like PB&J or matcha and oat milk for do-it-yourself cleaning: They go together perfectly.
- Cream of tartar drain fix. Bob Vila (the OG of home repair) suggests another combination to dissolve stubborn bathroom clogs of hair and soap scum. Combine two cups of baking soda with 1/8th cup of cream of tartar (approximately two tablespoons) and a half cup of salt.
- The simple detergent and hot water cure for grease clogs. For those who love using coconut oil in your beauty routine, you might notice your drain has been slow.
- Borax, salt, and vinegar. Here is a solution recommended by Networx. Start with 1/4 cup of salt and a 1/4 cup of Borax with a 1/2 cup of vinegar. Pour the solution into the drain followed by a pot of boiling water.
