GERMAN APPLE CAKE WITH STREUSEL
This German Apple Cake with Streusel Topping [Apfelkuchen mit Streusel] is one of my favorite traditional German desserts that I know you are going to love too! The tender, juicy apple filling is topped with a sweet, crunchy streusel on a buttery shortbread crust.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter and flour a 9x13" baking dish or spray with non-stick baking spray.
- Mix flour, butter, sugar, egg, and vanilla together in a large bowl using an electric mixer until combined.
- Pat the cake dough into an even layer on the bottom of the prepared baking dish using the back of a rubber spatula or your hands. Refrigerate until apple filling is ready.
- In another large bowl, combine the apples, lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar, cinnamon, and applesauce. Spoon apple filling in an even layer over the cake dough.
- In another large bowl, cut the butter into the flour and sugar using a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Squeeze handfuls of streusel topping together to create larger clumps, then sprinkle the streusel over the apple filling.
- Bake for 45 minutes until lightly golden brown on top and the apples are soft.
- Cool completely, then cut into squares and serve with sweetened whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. I think this cake tastes best cold, straight from the fridge.

This German Apple Cake is a moist dense cake that keeps well. It has been a family favorite for twenty years.

- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour one 9x13 inch cake pan.
- In a mixing bowl; beat oil and eggs with an electric mixer until creamy. Add the sugar and vanilla and beat well.
- Combine the flour salt, baking soda, and ground cinnamon together in a bowl. Slowly add this mixture to the egg mixture and mix until combined. The batter will be very thick. Fold in the apples by hand using a wooden spoon. Spread batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 45 minutes or until cake tests done. Let cake cool on a wire rack. Once cake is cool serve with a dusting of confectioners' sugar or with a Cream Cheese Frosting.

- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Butter an 8-inch square pan or equivalent-size baking dish.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a medium bowl, cream together the butter and 1 cup of the sugar. Stir in the eggs and vanilla. Add the flour mixture and beat until combined. Spread the mixture evenly in the prepared pan.
- In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1/3-cup sugar with the cinnamon. Squeeze lemon juice into a medium bowl. Peel, core, and slice the apples into the bowl. Add the cinnamon-sugar mixture and toss to thoroughly coat each apple slice. Arrange the apple slices on top of the batter in overlapping rows, pressing lightly into the batter. Bake for 45 minutes, until a cake tester or toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan on a wire rack for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

This apple sheet cake has 3 layers - a pastry layer, an applesauce layer, and a streusel layer, so you need a deep sheet pan. It is to die for.

- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Combine 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, 1/4 cup butter, and 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar in a large bowl; beat with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in lemon zest with the last egg.
- Combine 2 3/4 cups flour and baking powder. Sift over butter mixture and quickly beat into batter with the electric mixer running on low speed.
- Combine apple slices, lemon juice, and cinnamon sugar in a bowl and fold into batter. Spread batter onto the prepared baking sheet. Spoon applesauce onto batter and spread out evenly.
- Combine 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons flour, 1/2 cup cubed butter, 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, almond meal, and 2 teaspoons vanilla sugar in a bowl and mix into streusel. Sprinkle streusel over applesauce.
- Bake in the preheated oven until streusel is lightly browned and cake is set, about 40 minutes.

- Preheat oven to 350°. Grease and flour a 10-in. tube pan. Combine the first 3 ingredients; set aside. , In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar. Combine oil and orange juice and add alternately with dry ingredients to egg mixture. Beat until smooth; add vanilla and beat well. , Pour half of the batter into prepared pan. Arrange half the apples over the batter. Combine cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle half over the apples. This is a traditional German dessert given to me by my German friend Nicola. It's some work, but absolutely delicious and worth it! The streusel amounts are approximate as you have to mix it together with your hands until you reach the perfect crumbly texture that make it streusel.

- Mix ingredients for the dough in a large mixing bowl until completely mixed.
- Spread out dough on a lightly oiled 13x9 inch baking dish. Flatten the dough in the pan until it reaches all the corners and equally distributed.
- Place sliced apples on top in 2 to 3 rows slightly overlapping each other.
- Sprinkle cinnamon, ground cloves, and ground nutmeg on top.
- Sprinkle sliced almonds on top.
- Preheat oven to 350°F or 180°C.
- Make the streusel: in a separate bowl mix butter, flour, and sugar together with your hands until it forms small crumbles. You may need to add more flour to the mixture until you reach the desired crumbles.
- Sprinkle streusel (butter, flour, and sugar crumbles) on top.
- Bake for about 1 hour.
