Fried wontons - Homemade, crispy and delicious wontons with simple everyday ingredients. Learn how to make wontons with this easy Chinese recipe.

Provided by Rasa Malaysia

Categories     Chinese Recipes

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 lb. (0.2 kg) ground pork, chicken or turkey
1/4 lb. (0.1 kg) shrimp, chopped into small pieces
1/2 teaspoon soy sauce or fish sauce
1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
3 dashes ground white pepper
1 pack store-bought wonton wrappers
water, for sealing
vegetable oil, for deep frying

Steps:

  • In a bowl, mix the ground pork, shrimp, soy sauce, sesame oil and white pepper together. Stir to combine well to form a sticky filling.
  • To wrap the wontons, lay a piece of the wonton wrapper on your palm and add 1/2 tablespoon of the filling in the middle of the wrapper. (Use 1 teaspoon filling if you are a beginner.) Dip your index finger into the sealing water and trace it on the outer edges of the wonton wrapper.
  • You can wrap the wontons three ways. To make a triangle, just fold it up to form a triangle. Pinch the edges to seal tight. To make them into the pretty shape (far left in the above picture), just pull the two corners of the triangle down so one overlaps the other, pinch and seal with water. To make them into Hong Kong style wonton (far right in the above picture), please watch my video at the top of this post.
  • Heat up some oil for deep-frying. Once the oil is fully heated, deep fry the wontons until golden brown. Drain the excess oil with paper towels. Serve hot with Chinese sweet and sour sauce or Thai sweet chili sauce.

CHICKEN WONTON TACOS

Light and tasty, these make a great appetizer or a quick and easy main dish! Kids love them! Finally a dish that makes use of ground chicken but not so far-fetched. I bake the wonton wrappers to save time and it eliminates most of the fat. Although time-consuming, you can fry wrappers in sesame or olive oil for the extra flaky shells, folded in a triangle for about 1 minute on each side. I loved the ones at Applebee's® and decided to attempt a home version. I was extremely pleased with the healthier version! Top tacos with cilantro, red onion, or sweet onion, if desired. Serve lime wedges on the side.

Absolutely loved by the 9 of us!! My daughter Lisa and I had these at Applebee's. She found the recipe at http://blogchef.net. A timesaving tip...Freeze the chicken breast for about 2 hours before cutting. Makes it so much easier. Also..I just fry the papers flat. Couldn't get them shaped correctly. Turns out you can pile on more...

2 Tbsp soy sauce
2 Tbsp teriyaki sauce
10 won ton wrappers
oil for frying
4 Tbsp green onions sliced
4 Tbsp red onion
4 Tbsp cilantro, fresh
FOR COLE SLAW MIX
1 c coleslaw mix
1 1/2 Tbsp kraft asian toasted sesame dressing

  • Make the refried beans. Drain and rinse the beans. Add the beans, onion, garlic, onion and garlic powder, salt and chili powder to a pot. Cook on medium low till the onions get translucent and the beans are hot. You might have to add a little water if things start sticking to the pot. Just a little. Then take a potato masher and mash up the beans, onions and spices till they are all smashed and mixed together. Give it a little taste to see if it needs more salt or heat or spices. Set aside or store in the fridge till you are ready to make the wonton tacos.
  • Next make the pico de gallo. Throw your diced tomatoes, onion, cilantro, jalapeno, lime and salt into a bowl or tupperware container. Mix together well and give it a taste. Adjust for salt if need be. Set it aside or store in the fridge until you are ready to make the tacos.
  • Make the avocado creme. Put the avocado, sour cream, lime and salt into a bowl and mash the avocado with a fork while combining with the other ingredients. Mash until the mixture gets smooth. Its ok to have a couple very small lumps, but you want it to be pretty smooth. You can also do this in a food processor. Store the avocado creme in the fridge until you are ready to use it.
  • Marinate the shrimp. Add the shrimp, tequila, cilantro, lime, oil, garlic and salt to a bowl and toss well to coat the shrimp. Let it marinate for about 30 mins or so. You don't want it to sit too too long as it has lime juice in it.

  • Cook ground meat until done, add taco seasoning mix. Prepare an egg wash by combining 1 egg and 1 tablespoon of water in a small dish and whisk together well. In a large pot heat oil to 350 degrees.
  • You can use a smaller pot and save on oil as well. I sometimes don't even bother with a deep fryer, I grab a 3 or 4-quart pot, add oil, fry in a normal everyday pot.
  • To assemble the wontons take 1 wonton wrapper, about 2 teaspoons of ground meat and place into the wonton, fold the wonton wrapper over, brush the edges of the wonton with the egg wash, and fold over the wonton. Deep fry until golden and they float.
  • The best judge for deep frying is the color and the fact that it is floating in the oil. Serve up your taco wontons with condiments that you enjoy. Shredded cheese over these and popping them into the oven and turning them into nachos is very popular at my house. So is dipping them into your favorite toppings.
