Egg Nog is the classic holiday drink, and it's easier than you think to mix together. Try this recipe for your next party or festive drink at home.

2 eggs, separated
1/4 cup sugar, divided
1 1/2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup rum, bourbon or brandy
Garnish: grated nutmeg

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, beat the egg yolks with 3 tablespoons of the sugar until fluffy.
  • Stir in the milk, heavy cream and your spirit of choice.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites with the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar until soft peaks form.
  • Fold the egg whites into the yolk mixture.
  • Divide between four rocks glasses or punch or tea cups.
  • Garnish each with freshly grated nutmeg.

3 pasteurized eggs, separated
3 tablespoons white sugar, divided
1 cup whole milk
1 (1.5 fluid ounce) jigger brandy
1 (1.5 fluid ounce) jigger bourbon
1 (1.5 fluid ounce) jigger molasses rum
1 cup heavy whipping cream

Steps:

  • Beat yolks with an electric mixer until pale yellow in color. Slowly beat 2 tablespoons sugar into yolks for 30 seconds; beat in milk, brandy, bourbon, and rum until smooth.
  • Beat egg whites using an electric mixer until soft peaks form; add 1 tablespoon sugar and beat for 20 seconds. Fold egg white mixture into egg yolk mixture.
  • Beat heavy cream in a separate bowl using an electric mixer until soft peaks form; add to egg mixture. Gently fold mixture together; store in a glass container in the back of a refrigerator that is 45 degrees F (7 degrees C) or colder, at least 1 week and up to 1 month.

2 cups whole milk
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
6 large egg yolks, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon grated nutmeg, plus more for serving
1/2 cup maple syrup
1 cup finely crushed gingersnaps
8 ounces bourbon

Steps:

  • For the eggnog: Heat the milk and cream in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat until warm.
  • Meanwhile, in a bowl, beat the egg yolks and sugar until light, fluffy and pale in color.
  • Temper the egg yolks by adding a couple ladles of the warm milk/cream mixture into the egg mixture while whisking constantly. Add the mixture back to the pot over medium heat. Continue to cook, gently stirring, until thick, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a separate container and chill for at least 1 hour, then stir in the nutmeg.
  • For the cocktail: When ready to serve, add the maple syrup and crushed gingersnaps to separate small plates. Run the rim of each martini glass in the maple syrup, then dip the rim in the crushed gingersnaps.
  • For each drink, pour 3/4 cup of the eggnog into a cocktail shaker with ice and add 2 ounces of the bourbon. Shake vigorously, then pour into the prepared glass. Sprinkle over a little nutmeg and serve.
