3 DRINKS THAT CAUSE INFLAMMATION | LIVESTRONG

From livestrong.com
Author Jaime Osnato
  • Drinks With Added Sugar. Sugary beverages, which serve as the number one source of added sugar in the American diet, are considered pro-inflammatory, London says.
  • Drinks With Artificial Sweeteners. If you've already slashed sugar from your beverages, you might be tempted to try drinks with non-nutritive artificial sweeteners, such as diet sodas or some drinks labeled "sugar-free."
  • Alcohol. While an occasional cocktail or glass of wine is OK, drinking too much alcohol daily can increase inflammation in your body. Case in point: A 2017 study in ‌Alcohol Research: Current Reviews‌ found that excess booze results in intestinal inflammation by changing the composition and function of gut microbiota, weakening the intestinal lining and compromising the intestines' mucosal immunity.

5 INFLAMMATION CAUSING FOODS – CLEVELAND CLINIC

From health.clevelandclinic.org
Estimated Reading Time 7 mins
  • Added sugars. The average American consumes around 17 teaspoons of added sugar per day. We should be averaging around six teaspoons or less per day. It has become increasingly difficult to avoid added sugars because food manufacturers add large doses to improve the flavor of many packaged foods.
  • Trans fats. Food manufacturers create trans fats through the process of hydrogenation. “Adding hydrogen to fat changes its texture, consistency and shelf life,” says Coates.
  • Red and processed meats. Processed meats have been salted, cured, fermented or smoked for flavor or preservation purposes. Research shows both processed and red meats are high in saturated fat, which causes inflammation.
  • Omega-6s. Omega-6 fatty acids are fats that your body uses for energy. Since your body can’t make them, you get them from the foods you eat. Examples of omega-6s.
  • Refined carbs. Coates says refined carbohydrates are stripped of their nutrition and lack fiber. “These processed carbs are becoming a mainstay in a lot of people’s diets.”
