- Cut parts to size. Fasten a 1×4 board to a piece of 1/4-in. plywood with glue and 1-in. screws. Attach the assembly to the miter saw fence with 3/4-in.
- Make a drilling jig. Cut a piece of plywood approximately the size of the drill press table. Using glue and brad nails, fasten two scrap pieces to the plywood, forming a 90-degree angle.
- Line up the jig. Set the height of the drill press table so that the bit is 3/16 in. above the surface of the jig. Mark the center of one end of Part E. Holding the marked part in the jig, align the point of the Forstner bit with the part’s center mark.
- Drill the holes. Follow Figure A to drill the necessary holes in the parts. Small Forstner bits get clogged easily, causing them to get hot and lose their temper, so keep the bit clear of shavings.
- String the parts and tie off. Follow Figure B for the assembly order. Cut a 12-in. length of elastic cord and tie one end to a stationary item; we used a clamp attached to the workbench.

- Size and Print Template. I picked out a random piece of oak from my scrap wood pile from this project (it was actually a leftover 1×10 piece from this awesome collaboration I did with Rust-Oleum last year, so check that out if you haven’t yet!)
- Tape and Spray. I read in an online forum that adding painter’s tape or contact paper on top of the wood before using spray adhesive was a decent technique.
- Scroll the Outline. I debated at this point if I wanted to start by scrolling the smaller parts (individual pieces) versus the outline first. Usually, you want to cut out things like the little interior pieces first so that the project is less fragile/likely to snap when scrolling the smaller bits (putting pressure on the trunk, for example).
- Draw the Pieces and Scroll Again. I used a flat edge to re-draw the feet so they all reached the ground (better balance) and sketched out my pieces. I love puzzles, so this was actually pretty easy.
- Finish and Enjoy. I sanded the feet on my belt sander to make sure they were all flat enough to stand up on its own (it worked!). But, I still need to finish hand sanding the rest before I add some color and sealer.
