This recipe was handed down to me from my Great-grandmother who told stories of how clever they had to be to make things stretch during the Depression era My great- grandparents made it by turning their house into a boarding house. One of the meals she made to make sure everyone got some food were these thin burgers. The taste is awesome

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 lb ground beef
1 large egg
1 medium onion
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
12 slices white bread
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
12 slices American cheese

Steps:

  • Grate half the onion and thinly slice theother.
  • in a big bowl combine meat, egg, and spices
  • shape into thin patties.
  • spread butter on each side of the bread.
  • in a skillet cook bread 3 minutes on each side.
  • cook the burgers and drain the grease from skillet.
  • blot off extra grease with paper towels.
  • top each burger with a slice of cheese.
  • put pattys on bread and top with thinly sliced onion.
