THE 5 MOST COMMON CUMMINS 5.9L 12V ENGINE PROBLEMS
the-5-most-common-cummins-59l-12v-engine-problems image

From dieseliq.com
  • 5.9 Cummins Killer Dowel Pin. Despite the brutal reliability of the 5.9 Cummins 12v, it does have one fatal flaw. The 12v has a dowel pin that sits on the front of the engine.
  • 5.9 Cummins Heater Grid Failure. Unlike gas engines, diesels do not use spark plugs because diesel fuel only requires heat to ignite whereas gasoline needs spark.
  • Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Failure. The throttle position sensor measures how far down you’ve pressed the accelerator pedal and relays that information to the mass airflow (MAF) sensor.
  • 5.9 Cummins P7100 Overflow Valve. The P7100 injection pump (aka P-pump or inline pump) is a boss. Because it is mechanical and not electronically controlled, it is capable of handling up to 600rwhp without needing upgrading.
  • Cummins 6BT Transmission Power Limitations. This is less of a common problem and more of a heads-up for anyone looking to mod their 5.9 12v. Because you can add about 100hp for $0 on these diesels, it’s very tempting to do so.

5 MOST COMMON 5.9 CUMMINS BAD INJECTOR SYMPTOMS & HOW TO …

From carcarecamp.com
  • Long Crank Time. One of the most common symptoms of bad injectors in a 5.9 Cummins is longer crank time. When the injectors get worn out over time internally (the return check valve no longer seals), they will start to return too much fuel.
  • Excessive Black or White Smoke. Excessive smoke is another common symptom of 5.9 Cummins bad injectors. If you notice that your 5.9 is blowing more black smoke than usual or if the exhaust is particularly sooty, then that’s usually a sign that something is wrong with the injectors.
  • Rough Idle or Slight Miss. Another symptom of 5.9 Cummins bad injectors is a rough idle. If the 5.9 is not idling smoothly or has a slight misfire, then it’s a sign that there’s an issue with the injector’s armature valve, plunger, or the nozzle pintle.
  • No Start. Similar to the long starting time above, a no start usually means that either one or multiple injectors are either stuck open and leaking fuel into the combustion chamber or returning too much fuel.
  • Loud, Noisy, Clattering Engine. All diesel engines are inherently noisy when compared to their gasoline cousins, but when the injectors start to get worn on common-rail systems, you can usually tell by the increase in diesel-specific engine noise.

  • Engine Not Starting or Hard to Start. In some cases, Cummins diesel engines will turn over but will flat-out refuse to start. When a Cummins N14, Cummins M11, or other engine experiences difficulties starting or delay in some way, it may be due to one of a few typical issues, including
  • Running Rough at a Lower RPM. If your Cummins diesel engine is running rough even at a low measure of revolutions per minute (RPM), it often has something to do with the fuel.
  • Lack of Power. If you run into issues where your Cummins diesel engine struggles with starting or accelerating, it’s likely experiencing a lack of power.
  • Black Smoke. If you see black smoke coming from your Cummins diesel engine, it typically signifies an imbalance in the air-to-fuel ratio. The fuel system is either suffering a lack of clean air or delivering too much fuel to the engine.
  • White Smoke. White smoke coming from your Cummins diesel engine signifies that the fuel in the cylinder may be burning incorrectly. You can identify this as the issue if the smoke makes your eyes burn when you’re near it.
  • Blue Smoke. If you observe smoke coming from your engine with a blue tint, the engine is burning oil rather than just diesel. Blue smoke coming from your Cummins diesel engine may be the result of
