Crispy Smashed Apples with Cinnamon Sugar image

Toasted pecans, brown sugar and cinnamon combine in a crunchy, nutty topping for these apples. Smashing the fruit helps create a crispy edge. Serve these apples warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Number Of Ingredients 6

6 firm small apples (1 1/4 pounds), peeled, cored and halved crosswise
1 tablespoon canola or other neutral-tasting oil
¼ cup lightly packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons salted butter, melted
¼ cup chopped pecans
¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Position rack in upper third of oven. Preheat to 350°F.
  • Brush all sides of apple halves with oil; place cut-side down on a large rimmed baking sheet. Bake until soft but not mushy, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove from oven and turn broiler to high.
  • Meanwhile, stir brown sugar, butter, pecans and cinnamon together in a small bowl.
  • Using the bottom of a mason jar or other sturdy glass, flatten each apple half. Divide the cinnamon-sugar mixture among the apples. Broil until the pecans are browned, 1 to 2 minutes. Serve warm.

2 Granny Smiths
cinnamon , for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 160C/ 140C fan/ gas mark 3. Core the apple and slice through the equator into very thin slices 1 - 2mm thick. Dust with cinnamon and lay flat on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Cook for 45 mins - 1 hour, turning halfway through and removing any crisps that have turned brown. Continue cooking until the apples have dried out and are light golden. Cool, store in an airtight container and enjoy as a snack.

6 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons butter
TOPPING:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
1 large egg, lightly beaten
Vanilla ice cream, optional

Steps:

  • Combine the apples, sugar, flour and cinnamon in a large bowl. Transfer to an 11x7-in. baking dish; dot with butter. , For topping, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder and nutmeg in another large bowl. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in egg just until moistened; sprinkle over filling., Bake, uncovered, at 375° for 40-45 minutes or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender. Serve warm with ice cream if desired.
