Jan 16, 2005 Intending to use 18mm mdf board to form 3 no. 4' x 2' doors in the loft. Your best option would be concealed hinges often called Blum hinges. these are the type of hinges that are used on kitchen doors. You will need a 35mm bit for drilling the holes but it is much stronger than trying to fit a normal hinge into the side of MDF. From diynot.com

Aug 11, 2015 Cranked hinges are designed for 18mm MDF so might work but I think the side screws will be in the join, concealed hinges might work on the doors as long as the add on was big enough but not by attaching it to 2x2 as it is both too small and too big. From community.screwfix.com

Dec 11, 2018 Below is an image from the Hafele website of a cranked flush hinge to carry inset doors up to 16 mm thick. You state your doors are currently configured to finish up at 18 mm thick, so you might need to change them to finish thinner. From ukworkshop.co.uk
Oct 11, 2009 I am making some small (45 x 60cm) cupboard doors from 18mm ply with 12mm thick mdf 'planks' attached to the front to match some larger shaker style doors. Using normal butt hinges, the screws will fall partly between the mdf and the ply, or in the mdf. From diynot.com

Feb 6, 2021 Regular butt hinges work just fine and are the simplest and cheapest option. As you're using MDF you would want to glue and pin a softwood lipping on the hinge side of the door at least 1/2 inch thick and plane it flush, then hang the door as you would normally.
