CORNFLAKE CHRISTMAS WREATHS

Cornflake Christmas Wreaths image

Cornflakes get dressed for the holidays when mixed with a green marshmallow coating. Shaped into individual wreaths and topped with festive candies, these crunchy treats are a fun no-bake project.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     dessert

Time 1h10m

Yield 24 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

One 16-ounce package marshmallows
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Green gel food coloring, for tinting
6 cups cornflakes
Mini round cinnamon candies, for decorating
Red sour candy roll-ups, such as Rip Rolls, or licorice ropes, cut into 5-by-1/4-inch lengths, for decorating
White mini nonpareils, for decorating

Steps:

  • Line 2 baking sheets with parchment. Combine the marshmallows and butter in a large bowl and microwave on 50-percent power in 30-second intervals, stirring in between each, until melted, about 1 minute 30 seconds.
  • Stir in the vanilla and enough food coloring to make the mixture a deep green, 10 to 15 drops. Stir in the cornflakes until they are completely coated.
  • Working with wet hands, form the mixture into twenty-four 2-inch balls. Flatten on the prepared baking sheets and poke a hole in the middle of each with your finger, molding the sides as needed to form a wreath shape. Decorate with the cinnamon candies to create holly berries. Form the red candy strips into a simple bow on each wreath. Sprinkle lightly with the white nonpareils for snow. Let set at room temperature to firm up, about 2 hours, or refrigerate 30 minutes.

CORN FLAKE WREATHS

Corn Flake Wreaths image

These easy corn flake wreaths recipe is a long-time holiday favorite that is fast and simple to whip up, so they're great to make with kids.

Provided by Elizabeth LaBau

Categories     Dessert     Snack     Candy

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 7

4 ounces butter
3 cups miniature marshmallows
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 bottle of green food coloring
4 cups corn flakes cereal
24 small red candies (like red hots)

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with aluminum foil and spraying the foil with nonstick cooking spray.
  • Place the butter in a large microwave-safe bowl, and microwave the butter just until melted. Add the marshmallows to the bowl, and microwave in 30-second intervals until the marshmallows are melted, stirring between each interval.
  • Once the marshmallows and butter are melted and smooth, stir in the almond extract, vanilla extract, and enough food coloring to get the desired color. Adding the cornflakes will dilute the green color, so make the color a little darker than you want the finished product to be.
  • Pour the cornflakes over the marshmallow mixture and stir gently to coat the flakes, trying not to crush them.
  • Place a heaping spoonful of coated cornflakes onto the prepared baking sheet. Spray your hands with nonstick cooking spray, and gently form a hole in the middle of the candy, working it into a 3-inch wreath to yield 8 candies.
  • While the wreath is still sticky, press three red candies in a cluster on each wreath for decoration.
  • Allow the wreaths to set at room temperature, then carefully remove them from the baking sheet. Serve them at room temperature. These candies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature. Separate each layer of candy with waxed paper so that they do not stick together.

Yield Makes 1 1/2 dozen 2-inch wreaths

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 cup (4 ounces) unsalted butter
30 (7.25 ounces) large marshmallows
1 1/2 teaspoons green liquid food coloring
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
4 cups (5 ounces) cornflakes
2 tablespoons (1 ounce) cinnamon red-hots (candied)
Equipment: flat counter or cookie sheet, lined with wax paper, sprayed with nonstick vegetable cooking spray or lightly greased or buttered; 2 small spoons sprayed with nonstick vegetable cooking spray or lightly greased or buttered.

Steps:

  • Spray a medium saucepan with nonstick vegetable shortening or lightly grease it.
  • Melt the butter over low heat.
  • Add the marshmallows and melt them over low heat, stirring constantly, until smooth (about 6 minutes). Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the food coloring and vanilla extract until well blended. Stir in the cornflakes to coat them well. Keep the mixture warm by placing the saucepan in a large pot or skillet filled with 1 inch of very hot tap water. Replace the water as it cools.
  • Working quickly so the mixture does not harden, use the 2 spoons, or lightly greased fingers, to drop small (1 heaping tablespoon) mounds of the cornflake mixture onto the wax paper. With lightly greased fingers, quickly form cornflake mounds into wreaths with holes in the centers. Immediately, while the wreaths are still sticky, decorate the wreaths with red-hots.
  • When wreaths dry, they may be strung with nylon string or gold ribbons as tree ornaments.
