CONDIMENT ESSENTIALS: SPICY HONEY/MUSTARD SAUCE
Here is another honey/mustard recipe to add to all the others. This one is a bit different because it has a bit of a kick, additional honey helps to balance out the mustard and a few other bits-and-bobs to add to the mix of flavors. Served this first batch with chicken wings... no leftovers. This is a great sauce for chicken,...

Steps:
- 1. PREP/PREPARE
- 2. Storage of homemade condiments and spices Because homemade spices and condiments do not contain any preservatives, it is important to store them properly. Non-reactive (glass) containers with tight-fitting lids are a must. If I am making a dry spice, I love to use old spice bottles that I have run through the dishwasher. If I am doing homemade sauces, I love using Weck jars. They are all glass, come in all sizes and shapes, and have excellent leakproof lids. If you shop online, you can go to Amazon, and type in "Weck Jars" and you will find a ton of them. Dry spices should be kept in a cool space, away from sunlight (spice cabinet), and sauces, in most cases, should be stored in the fridge. This particular recipe, if properly stored will last 7 - 10 days, but it cannot be frozen.
- 3. What is Nutritional Yeast? It is an inactivated form of yeast commonly used to leaven bread. In other words: Dead Yeast. Dried nutritional yeast is a versatile seasoning to keep right next to the salt and pepper. Shake a dusting on toast or a bagel, use it to flavor popcorn, add it to soups before serving, replace the classic Parmesan sprinkle on a plate of pasta. Vegan-adapted recipes use nutritional yeast to add creaminess to sauces or to replicate traditionally cheese-laden dishes such as mac and cheese, au gratin potatoes, or Italian-style pasta casseroles. What Does It Taste Like? The words "nutty" and "cheesy" appear in nearly every description of nutritional yeast, yet the flavor does not replicate those ingredients exactly. It adds umami, that savory background note often referred to as the fifth taste, and similarly to salt, enhances the overall savories' of a dish, although it contains almost no sodium.
- 4. Homemade Mayonnaise To be sure, there are some good store-bought mayo's on the market (my all-time favorite is Duke's) If you live in the South, you have probably seen it on the shelves of your local grocer; however, as you travel North, it becomes as scarce as hen's teeth. If you would like to take a stab at making your own (it really is not all that difficult), check out this recipe: https://www.justapinch.com/recipes/sauce-spread/spread/mayonnaise-essentials-faux-duke-s-version.html?r=1
- 5. Gather your ingredients (mise en place).
- 6. Add all the ingredients to a mixing bowl, and whisk to combine. Then store in the fridge overnight before using.
- 7. The Chicken Wings I used this as a dipping sauce for some chicken wings. I put them into a 425f (220c) for 20 minutes. Then, I took them out and tossed them with a mixture of Frank's Hot sauce and butter. Put them back into the oven for about 15 minutes, until they were golden brown.
- 8. PLATE/PRESENT
- 9. Use on veggies, meat, fish, poultry, or as a dipping sauce. Enjoy.
- 10. Keep the faith, and keep cooking.

- 4-Ingredient Pesto. Sure, it’s easier to buy a jar of pesto, but soon you’ll be making your own every day because this version is so easy! Just throw some basil, garlic, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, olive oil and a little salt and pepper into a food processor, and you have a delicious pesto you can enjoy over whole-wheat pasta, grilled fish, chicken or toasted pita bread.
- Avocado Shallot Spread. Nutrition Stripped’s McKel Hill gives guacamole a nutrition upgrade by adding shallots. If you’re not familiar with shallots, they have a unique garlicky and onion-like flavor.
- Healthy Garlic Herb Dip. If you love the subtle garlic flavor of aioli, you’ll enjoy this lightened up garlic herb dip, which features nonfat Greek yogurt for filling protein.
- Homemade Healthier Nutella. We’re all about enjoying everything in moderation and that includes nutella, of course. Chocolate lovers will approve of this healthy hazelnut spread, which cuts out the refined sugar and preservatives found in the store-bought version.
- Spicy Roasted Red Pepper Dip. Nothing can compare to the flaming chile flavor of harissa, a Tunisian hot sauce. But if you’re in a pinch for time and ingredients, this spicy red pepper dip will do.
- Healthier Homemade Tomato Ketchup. Slather ketchup on French fries, burgers, hot dogs — even eggs? Since most store-bought brands are loaded with high-fructose corn syrup, the calories and sugar quickly add up.
- The Ultimate Kimchi. Probiotics, such as kimchi and Greek yogurt, are essential for a healthy gut. They help fight inflammation and prevent an imbalance of “good” and “bad” bacteria in your microbiome.
- Super Simple Mango Chutney. Chutney is a spread found in many traditional Indian dishes, usually made with fresh fruits and vegetables, vinegar, spices and sugar.
- 3-Ingredient Honey Mustard Sauce. You’ll never want to grab another honey mustard dipping sauce at your local fast-food joint again once you get a taste of this painfully easy-to-prepare recipe.
- Easy Spicy Salsa Verde. Whether you’re enjoying tacos or breakfast eggs, salsa verde is a great addition to any dish. This recipe calls for roasting tomatillos and chile peppers until they’re charred before blending them.

- Culver’s Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese Sauce "The cheese sauce is good, but it’s not like nacho cheese sauce," explained the Culver’s cashier. He said he could give me honey mustard sauce for the crinkle cut fries and tenders if I wanted, but he said it in a way like, “Why even bother?”
- Chick-fil-A Sauce There’s a reason Chick-fil-A is one of the most beloved chains in America -- all the food that comes out of the kitchen is top-notch.
- Raising Cane’s Cane’s Sauce This chicken finger Valhalla has honey mustard. It’s not advertised, but it’s available if you ask for it, and it’s a smooth, delicious addition to everything on the menu.
- McDonald's Honey Mustard Mickey D’s has plenty of sauces (Hot Mustard, Spicy Buffalo, Tangy BBQ, Sweet & Sour, Buttermilk Ranch), but true fans of the fast food spot know there is only one dipping sauce worth asking the cashier if they can throw a couple more in the bag: Honey Mustard.
- Whataburger Spicy Ketchup There’s no award for “least amount of ingredients in a fast food dipping sauce,” but based on a super unscientific eye test, it’s pretty clear Whataburger would win.
- Jollibee Gravy. There will not be any discussion of the honey mustard or ranch at Jollibee because it is completely inconsequential to a meal at Jollibee.
- Arby’s Horsey Sauce. Plenty of fast food joints have a dipping sauce spiked with horseradish. The good majority of them are not pleasant to eat, and I say that as someone with first-hand experience.
- Popeyes Mardi Gras Mustard. The brand that easily won the Great Chicken Sandwich Wars of 2019 has a dipping sauce roster that highlights its Cajun roots.
- Jack in the Box Frank’s RedHot Buffalo Dipping Sauce. First of all, hats off to Jack in the Box for refrigerating all its dipping sauces. I’ve eaten more unrefrigerated ranch than anyone should ever have to.
- Sonic Drive-In BBQ Sauce. When you visit a Sonic, you might notice the restaurant’s music mix (Sonic Radio, for those in the know) plays upbeat music you can jam to while you eat tater tots to from the comfort of your car.

- Ranch. Ranch seems to pair well with almost any food. From chicken wings to hamburgers to salads, this condiment is always in use. Why not add that taste of creamy, tangy goodness to your French fries.
- Honey mustard. The sweet, yet spicy flavor of honey mustard makes it a great choice for French fries. Sometimes the tanginess of the mustard cuts the fat from the frying.
- Milkshake. What probably started as a joke is one of the best French fry pairings. The sweetness of the milkshake and the salt on the French fries make this combination a must try.
- Barbecue Sauce. Sure, barbecue sauce is close to ketchup. Still, barbecue sauce has a smoky flavor that adds depth to this condiment. Depending on the brand, the barbecue sauce has a layers of spice that add a punch of flavor to the fries.
- Gravy. What’s one of the reasons that poutine tastes so good? Gravy on top of French fries is awesome. While the cheese curds are an added bonus, the gravy brings back memories of mashed potatoes and gravy.
- Gochujang. Previously, FoodSided covered our love for the Korean fermented red chili paste. On French fries, this condiment adds delicious umami flavor.
- Mayonnaise & Sriracha. For people who enjoy the heat, sriracha is a favorite condiment. Since sriracha alone on fries can be a little overpowering, try mixing it with a little mayonnaise.
- Cheese sauce. Forget cheese sauce on nachos when you can have cheese sauce on French fries. The ooey, gooey cheese sauce makes French fries a decadent treat.
- Sweet and Sour Sauce. At least a few fast food places still have sweet and sour packets available. If you can find a couple, try dipping your fries in this sauce.

- Follow Your Heart Vegenaise. Vegans have the self-proclaimed hippie founders of Follow Your Heart Café to thank for creating the original vegan condiment: Vegenaise.
- Daiya Honey Flavored Mustard Dairy-Free Dressing. Given the vegan chicken boom, it’s only appropriate to keep a bottle of vegan honey mustard on hand.
- Banchan’s Original Japanese Barbecue Sauce. Depending on where you grew up and where you live now, you likely have an attachment to a certain style of barbecue sauce.
- Primal Kitchen’s Rosemary Garlic Vegan Mayo (Aioli) What’s the difference between mayo and aioli? $ 3 at a restaurant. Essentially fancy, garlicky mayo, aioli is easily veganized.
- Trader Joe’s Vegan Kale, Cashew, & Basil Pesto. Pesto should be vegan, but omnivore brands and chefs often can’t help but put parmesan where it doesn’t belong.
- Hot Honee. This spicy-sweet condiment is on trend. Popularized by the fried chicken craze, hot honey was soon taken up by the pizzaiolos to accentuate spicy pepperoni pies.
- Good Karma French Onion Dip. If you’re using anything other than ruffled potato chips to scoop up this spread, you’re doing French onion dip wrong. The fried, ruffled variety is the only chip strong enough to stand up to this robustly rich and thick dip.
- Hidden Valley Plant Powered Ranch. Whether you drizzle it over vegan pizza or exclusively reserve it for salads, this herbaceous condiment is a vegan triumph.
- Forager Plant Based Sour Cream. Sour cream is like country music—people have very strong opinions about it. It’s a love it or hate it kind of condiment, but if you’re Team Sour Cream, this vegan product gets it just right.
- Nobel Made Buffalo Sauce. When it comes to chicken wings, what matters most is not what the wings are actually made of, but the sauce they’re smothered in.

- Truff’s Truffle Mayo. We thought upgrading to Kewpie (aka the cult-favorite Japanese mayo made with MSG and egg yolks instead of whole eggs) was the end of the mayo-lined road for us.
- Mike’s Hot Honey. In case you haven’t noticed, spicy sauces and foods reign supreme in 2021. It’s been deemed the “new umami” by Pinterest, and searches for hot honey have been on the rise.
- Melinda’s Spicy Garlic Parmesan Wing Sauce. Social media strategist Ali Brown swears by all of Melinda’s condiments, which range from barbecue sauces to preserves.
- Bitchin’ Sauce. Who knew a vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free dip could be so creamy and indulgent? Chalk it up to Bitchin’ Sauce’s savory base of fatty almonds and grapeseed oil.
- Hoff & Pepper’s Smoken Ghost Ketchup. We first became familiar with Hoff’s when embarking on a massive hot sauce taste-test. The brand’s Smoken Ghost Hot Sauce uses four types of Tennessee chiles—red jalapeño, habanero, chipotle and ghost pepper, to be exact—to achieve a creeping heat and smoky flavor profile that lend themselves beautifully to avocado toast, egg salad and beyond.
- Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing. You’re no doubt familiar with the creamy, herbaceous magic that is ranch dressing. There are endless variations of the buttermilk-based dressing spiked with herbs and spices at the supermarket, but in the words of branded content managing editor Rachel Gulmi, Hidden Valley’s is “simply the best.”
- Ken’s Steak House Honey Mustard. Honey mustard may seem simple enough to pull off at home: It’s just a matter of whisking together the right amounts of honey and mustard, right?
- Trader Joe’s Carrot Ginger Miso Salad Dressing. Miso paste is a great ingredient to have on hand 24/7, since it imparts a punch of salty umami to recipes like noodle soup, sheet-pan fish and vegan caramel dip.
- A.1. Original Steak Sauce. is the gold standard when it comes to steak sauce for a reason, that reason being its uniquely bold, nuanced flavor. The ingredients include usual suspects like tomato paste, vinegar and dried garlic, as well as a few surprises (hello, raisin paste and crushed orange puree).
- All the Hot Sauce. In case you haven’t noticed, our team is big on all things spicy. So, it’s no surprise that we have serious feelings about hot sauce.
