1 large onion, cut into 1/4 in slices
1 1/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, as needed
3/4 cup breadcrumbs, dry
seasoning salt
oil, for frying approx 1 qt

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F.
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside.
  • In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside.
  • Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork.
  • Dip the floured fings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping.
  • The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up.
  • Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish.
  • Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the rings to coat.
  • The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Deep fry the rings a few at time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Remove to paper towels to drain. Seasoning with season salt, and serve.

1 quart vegetable oil for frying
4 large onions, peeled and sliced into rings

Steps:

  • Whisk together eggs, milk, flour, baking powder, and onion salt in a bowl to make a smooth batter.
  • Heat the oil in a large saucepan or deep fryer until a thermometer reads 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch-thick rings

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep fryer to 375 degrees F.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the flour, cayenne pepper, some salt and pepper, the egg and soda water. Before dipping the onion rings, add some ice cubes to keep the mixture very cold.
  • Dip the separated onion slices into the batter until they are all coated and set aside. Repeat with the remaining rings.
  • Deep fry the rings, a few at a time, until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with salt and pepper and serve.

1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. 2 large onions, halved, thinly sliced
1 cup buttermilk
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tablespoon salt
2 teaspoons paprika
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Vegetable oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Separate onions into strips. Mix with buttermilk in large bowl. Cover with plastic and refrigerate 1 hour. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Keep refrigerated.)
  • Stir flour, salt, paprika, and cayenne pepper in another large bowl. Drain onions. Add to flour mixture and toss to coat. Pour oil into heavy saucepan to depth of 3 inches. Heat to 350°F; Working in small batches, shake excess flour off onions and cook in hot oil until golden brown and crispy, about 2 minutes per batch. Using slotted spoon, transfer onions to paper towels and drain.
  • Transfer onions to platter. Season with salt and serve immediately.

1 teaspoon ground cumin
Pinch of cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon coarse salt, plus more for seasoning
3/4 cup buttermilk
3/4 cup beer
1 large egg
4 cups peanut oil
2 large white onions (about 2 pounds), sliced crosswise 1/2 inch thick and separated into rings

Steps:

  • Combine flour, cumin, cayenne, and 1 teaspoon salt in a medium bowl. Slowly whisk in buttermilk, beer, and egg until smooth. Let batter stand 15 minutes.
  • In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium-high heat until a deep-fry thermometer registers 375 degrees. Working in batches, dip onion slices in batter, turning to coat. Gently drop slices into hot oil. Cook, turning rings once, until golden brown, about 2 minutes. (Adjust heat between batches as necessary to keep oil at a steady temperature.)
  • Use a slotted spoon to transfer rings to a paper-towel-lined baking sheet to drain. Season immediately with salt.

  • Use a fork to steady your onion. Slice the onion into rings about 1cm wide. Remove the skin and separate the rings.
  • Heat the oil to 180C in a heavy-based pan - it should be no more than 1/ 3 full.
  • Meanwhile put the flour and sparkling water in a bowl and season generously. Whisk together to form a batter.
  • Coat a small batch of onion rings in batter. Carefully lower into the hot oil and deep-fry until crisp and golden, about 2 - 3 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a piece of kitchen towel to drain. Repeat with the remaining onion and batter.

  • Heat vegetable oil in a deep-fryer or pot to 365 degrees. Onion slices should be about 1/4 inch thick. Separate the onion slices into rings and set aside.

1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
3 large eggs, beaten
1 cup all-purpose flour
dipping sauce, of your choice, optional

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425˚F (220˚C). Grease a baking sheet with nonstick spray or line with parchment paper.
  • Cut the onion crosswise into ½-inch (1 cm) slices and gently push apart each layer to get individual rings. Set aside.
