Steps:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Place apples on a cutting board. With a sharp knife, carefully cut the top 1/2 inch from the top of each.
- Using an apple corer or a small melon baller, scoop out the stem, core and seeds from each apple, leaving the bottom intact. Stand the apples in a 9 inch square baking dish, cut side up.
- Divide 1/4 cup each chopped Snickers and Skor/Heath bar candy bars among the apples, about 2 tablespoons of candy per apple.
- Place 1 1/2 teaspoon of butter inside each apple, on top of the candy bar pieces. Then divide the remainder 1/4 cup chopped candy bars among the apples.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the cider and sugar and pour mixture over and around the apples. Carefully place baking dish in the oven and bake the apples uncovered until tender, about 1 hour and 20 minutes. (Original recipes states 1 hour and 20 minutes, but if cooked too long the apples become mealy. Start checking around 45 minutes.) Remove from oven and let sit 5 minutes.
- Serve hot or warm, spoon the pan juices over apples and add vanilla ice cream if desired.

Steps:
- With the rack in the middle position, preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
- In a bowl, combine all the ingredients except the apples. Set aside.
- Slice a thin layer off the top of each apple. Using a melon baller, dig out the core, leaving the bottom intact. Make a horizontal cut through the peel around each apple so the fruit doesn't burst when baking.
- Place the apples on a 33 x 23-cm (13 x 9-inch) baking dish. Divide the oat mixture among the apples, spooning it into the hollows and mounding it on the tops. Cover the dish with aluminum foil. Bake 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking until the oat mixture is lightly browned, 5 to 10 minutes.
- Cool to room temperature. Serve as is or with vanilla ice cream.
CANDY APPLES
Steps:
- Clean apples. Place a wooden stick in the center of the apple. Set aside. Place the candy corn and licorice in separate bowls.
- Place the water, sugar, and corn syrup in a clean 3-quart saucepot. Stir to form wet sand.
- Place on medium flame until the sugar boils; at that point increase the heat to high. Occasionally, wash sides of pot with cold water and a brush, if needed, to prevent crystallization. Cook on high heat to 283 degrees F. Add red food coloring and swirl around in the pot; do not stir. Continue to cook to 300 degrees F. Remove from the heat and let rest for 3 minutes.
- Dip the apple on an angle, rotating the apple clockwise, to coat the apple. Immediately roll the apple in candy corn or licorice. Set aside to cool.

Steps:
- Insert lollipop sticks into 4 apples, one-third of the way. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and coat with cooking spray. Stir together 1 1/4 cups sugar and 1/4 cup each corn syrup and water in a small saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and add 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring. Continue cooking, swirling the pan but not stirring, until a candy thermometer registers 290 degrees F, about 10 minutes; remove from the heat. Immediately dip each apple into the candy, then twirl the apple over the pan to let the excess drip off. Decorate (see instructions below).
- How to Decorate
- Spun-sugar apple: Dip the apple as directed, then hold sideways over the pan, dip a fork in the candy mixture and quickly wave it all over the apple to make thin threads. Let set.
- Candy cane apple: Roll the apple in crushed candy canes immediately after dipping. Let set.
- White chocolate apple: Let the coating set, then drizzle the apple with melted white chocolate. Sprinkle with silver nonpareils.
- Coconut apple: Roll the apple in shredded coconut immediately after dipping. Let set.

Steps:
- Insert a lollipop stick or dowel into the top of 6 apples. Microwave 3 cups white candy melts in 30-second intervals, stirring, until melted. Dip each apple into the white candy and let the excess drip off. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet; let set before decorating unless otherwise directed.
- Mummy: Attach 2 candy eyeballs to a white candy-coated apple using more candy melts. Microwave 2 marshmallows until puffed, 10 to 15 seconds. Stir until smooth; let cool slightly. Using a spoon, scoop up the marshmallow (it will stretch into a thread) and wrap it around the apple.
- Spiderweb: Microwave black candy melts until melted; transfer to a small resealable plastic bag. Snip a corner. While a white candy-coated apple is still wet, pipe a spiral onto one side with the melted black candy. Use a skewer to gently drag lines out from the center to create a web pattern. Let set.
- Cat: Snip a marshmallow in half diagonally, then trim to make 2 triangles. Press the cut sides in black sanding sugar. Attach to a white candy-coated apple using more candy melts, then attach 2 green candies for eyes. Pipe lines with black icing.
- Skeleton: Roll mini marshmallows between your thumb and index finger to make them into a bone shape. Attach the marshmallows to a white candy-coated apple in a hand formation using more candy melts.
- Werewolf: Drag a skewer across a white candy-coated apple in 3 spots to look like scratches. Fill the scratches with red gel icing.
- Ghost: Make a puddle of melted white candy melts on parchment; set a white candy-coated apple on the puddle while still wet. Let set, then pipe eyes and a mouth with black gel icing.
CANDY APPLES
Traditional candy apples are dipped in a vibrant syrup that's tinted red. This version skips the food coloring, and instead infuses the candy coating with cinnamon and vanilla. If you're worried about your teeth, serve these by slicing them, rather than trying to take a bite, as the candy coating sets to be quite firm. Be sure to start with room temperature apples as cold apples will cause the candy mixture to harden too quickly making it difficult to work with.

Steps:
- Line a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or a piece of lightly greased parchment paper. Place the apples onto the prepared baking sheet, and press a treat stick firmly into the stem end, into the center of each apple.
- In a medium pot, combine the sugar, corn syrup, 1/2 cup water, vanilla bean seeds (discard the pod) or extract, cinnamon and salt. Stir the mixture over medium heat until the mixture begins to bubble at the edges, about 5 minutes - once it begins to bubble, stop stirring.
- Cook the mixture (without stirring) until it reads 300 degrees on an instant-read thermometer, about another 10 to 15 minutes. Leave the syrup mixture in the pot, and cool to 275 degrees. (The mixture will cool quickly; if it cools too much, it can be reheated until fluid.)
- Working quickly, dip 3/4 of an apple into the sugar syrup, tilting the pot as needed to coat. Hold the apple over the sugar syrup, letting the excess drip off, then transfer to the baking sheet. Repeat with remaining apples, reheating the sugar syrup as necessary. Cool completely before serving.
