Our Very Favorite Homemade Barbecue Sauce image

Super easy, nice and tangy, and with just the slightest touch of heat, this has been our go-to homemade barbecue sauce for years. Got 20 minutes? Make some!

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 cups ketchup
3 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce (use gluten-free, such as Tamari, for a gluten-free version)
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce (can sub vegan or vegetarian Worchestershire sauce)
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes (or more to taste)
2 medium cloves garlic (minced) (about 2 teaspoons)

Steps:

  • Add all ingredients to a medium-sized saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat, and continue simmering for 15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool. Place in an airtight container. Keeps refrigerated for up to one week.

Number Of Ingredients 13

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped (about 1 cup)
2 cloves garlic, smashed
3 cups ketchup
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/4 cup steak sauce
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons molasses
3 tablespoons yellow mustard
1/2 teaspoon ground celery seed
Kosher salt
1 to 2 teaspoons liquid smoke, optional

Steps:

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a medium pot over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic and cook, until the onions are golden, 6 to 7 minutes. Stir in the ketchup, 1 cup water, the vinegar, brown sugar, steak sauce, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, mustard, celery seed and 1 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the onions are tender, about 15 minutes. Stir in the liquid smoke, if using. Strain the sauce, pressing on the solids to extract any liquid.

2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
1 medium onion, chopped
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup prepared chili sauce
1/2 cup catsup
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon molasses
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika

Steps:

  • Melt butter in large skillet over medium-low heat. Add onion. Cover and cook until translucent, about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Blend in remaining ingredients. Bring sauce to boil. Reduce heat and simmer gently, uncovered, 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve at room temperature.

CAROLINA BBQ SAUCE

This spicy, tangy sauce, adapted from Skylight Inn in Ayden, NC, adds zip to any BBQ dish. It's vinegar-based, according to classic Carolina tradition.

1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 tablespoon crushed red pepper
3 tablespoons hot sauce, preferably Texas Pete brand
1/4 cup Sweet BBQ Pit Sauce, see "Sweet BBQ Pit Sauce" lesson for recipe; or use another sweet BBQ sauce
1 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar

Steps:

  • In a mixing bowl combine sugar, black pepper, chili powder, crushed red pepper, and hot sauce to make a paste. Add the BBQ sauce, followed by vinegar; stir well to combine. The final consistency should be quite fluid, rather than thick. Keeps in a covered container at room temperature for several months. Makes about 2 cups.

1/2 c chili sauce(i use heinz)
1/2 c ketchup
1/4 c apple cider vinegar
2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp light brown sugar
2 Tbsp worchestershire sauce
1 Tbsp molasses
2 tsp salt
2 tsp dry mustard(i use colman's)
1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper
1/2 tsp paprika

Steps:

  • 1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add onion and cover and cook until translucent about 10 minutes stirring occasionally
  • 2. Blend in remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer gently uncovered 30 minutes. Stir occassionally.
  • 3. Let set at room temperature

1/2 onion, chopped (optional)
1 celery rib, chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • If using optional onion and celery, saute in a small amount of oil.
  • Mix remaining ingredients and pour into saucepan. Boil for 1 minute.
  • Spoon sauce over choice of meat.
  • Enjoy!
