SIMPLE ORANGE SANGRIA
The weather is improving and my taste for sangria is on the rise! I love this particularly simple recipe. You will too!

Steps:
- Cut 1 orange into thin slices, then into quarters, and reserve for garnish.
- With vegetable peeler or zester, thinly remove outer peel from second orange.
- In large bowl, using a spoon, bruise the peel with the sugar to release the oils.
- Stir in orange juice, wine and liqueur.
- Cover and chill. Remove orange peel after 15 minutes.
- Serve the sangria, garnished with the orange slices, over ice.
BLOOD ORANGE SANGRIA
Steps:
- Zest one of the blood oranges and combine it with the sugar in a small bowl. Rub the sugar and zest together with your fingers until fragrant. Juice four of the blood oranges (I simply did this by hand), discarding any seeds or pith. Chop the remaining blood oranges into pieces.
- In a large pitcher, combine the wine, brandy, blood orange juice, club soda, apples, strawberries, raspberries and blood oranges. Stir well to combine. Place the orange sugar on a plate, then run a lemon, lime or orange slice around the rim of each glass. Dunk each glass in the sugar, coating well. Fill each glass with a few ice cubes, then add some of the fruit from the sangria. Pour the sangria into each glass and serve!
- Note: this definitely gets better as it sits, so you can make it ahead of time and store it in the fridge.
BLOOD ORANGE SANGRIA
Any good quality fruity red wine will work in this recipe. Combine a pinot noir and Beaujolais for a good taste. You can also substitute navel oranges for blood oranges if needed. This recipe is from Cooking Light.

- Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher and stir until sugar dissolves. Cover and chill 8 hours or overnight. Discard cloves and cinnamon sticks. Pour sangria into individual glasses, including the fruit.

- Begin by grabbing a large pitcher and pouring an entire bottle of red wine into it. Yes, entire bottle. You will be enjoying this sangria with some of your friends because it is just delicious. I recommend a red wine that is well-balanced; not too sweet, not too dry.
- Next, add 1/2 cup of orange liqueur and 1/2 cup of simple syrup. Simple syrup is made by combining equal parts water and sugar in a sauce pan over a low heat until the sugar completely dissolves. When it reaches room temperature, it is ready to be added to drinks.
- Squeeze the juice of one blood orange into your pitcher. Don’t have a blood orange? Don’t worry; you can use any type of orange for this recipe. I just love how the blood oranges coordinate with my awesome red hair color. Plus, they are in season now, so it worked out perfectly!

- So here’s the deal: You may or may not want to add simple syrup. It will depend on the sweetness of your wine/fruit and your own preferences. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth but I still preferred my sangria with the full amount of simple syrup to balance out the harshness of the brandy. To make simple syrup, combine equal parts sweetener and hot water. Whisk until the sweetener has mixed into the water.
- Juice two of the blood oranges with a citrus juicer (or just squeeze the blood orange halves to extract the juice). Slice the remaining blood orange into thin rounds, then slice them through the middle to create half moons.
- In a pitcher, combine the blood orange juice, blood orange slices, pomegranate arils and brandy. For best flavor, let the fruit marinate in this mixture for a few hours, covered and chilled in the refrigerator. (Don’t worry, it’ll be great right away if you need it now.)
