3 tablespoons butter or 3 tablespoons bacon fat
1 small green cabbage, chopped
1/2 cup onion, chopped
1/2-3/4 lb smoked sausage, sliced (I like Conecuh, Original)
1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained (I like Hunt's Petite Diced)
1/4 teaspoon garlic salt, to taste
1/4 teaspoon Tony Chachere's Seasoning, to taste (optional)
salt, to taste
black pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Chop/slice the sausage, cabbage, and onion.
  • In a large non-stick skillet, pre-cook the sliced sausage about 3 minutes to render some of the fat out. Remove sausage from skillet and drain on paper towels if needed. Set aside. Wipe the skillet clean.
  • In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add cabbage and onion and cook and stir on medium-high for about 5 minutes, until cabbage starts to wilt.
  • Add remaining ingredients, and the sausage.
  • Cover the skillet and cook for about 10 minutes.
  • Uncover, and finish cooking until cabbage is desired tenderness and most of liquid has been reduced.

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 slices bacon (about 3 ounces) sliced crosswise into 1/2-inch strips
1 medium onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, sliced
1/2 large head green cabbage, quartered, cored and sliced crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick slices
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • Place the butter and the bacon in a large Dutch oven or pot with a lid over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until bacon is lightly browned and crisp, 7 to 8 minutes (lower the heat if the bacon begins to get too dark). Using a slotted spoon, remove the bacon to a paper-towel-lined plate and reserve (do not wipe out pot).
  • Add the onion, garlic, and 1/2 teaspoon salt to the pot, stirring frequently with a wooden spoon and scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Cook until the onion is very soft, about 8 minutes.
  • With the heat at medium-high, add the cabbage, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper. Stir until the cabbage starts to soften, 5 minutes. Reduce heat to medium-low or low and cook, covered, until the cabbage is very tender, with a little bit of texture remaining in the thicker rib pieces, 12 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure the bottom isn¿t getting too dark.
  • Uncover the pot and increase heat to high. Add the Worcestershire sauce and stir for about a minute. There should be almost no liquid in the pot. Add more salt and pepper, if necessary, transfer to a serving bowl and top with the reserved bacon bits.

  • Cook the bacon in a heavy bottomed skillet over medium heat until it starts to become crisp and most of the fat is rendered. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon to a paper towel lined plate to dry, and remove all but about 2 tbsp of the bacon grease from the pan.
  • Add the onion, cook for about a minute or two, then add the garlic and continue to cook until the onion is softened - about 5 - 6 minutes.
  • Increase the heat a bit, add begin to add the cabbage, stirring well to combine. You might not be able to fit all the cabbage in at once, so continue to stir, and as the cabbage cooks and wilts add more until it is all in the pan
  • Add the paprika, cayenne, salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce, stir well to combine, then add the cooked bacon.
  • Continue to cook and stir for about 15 mins more, or until the cabbage is cooked and tender.

1 medium head of white cabbage, trimmed, cored, and sliced
1 TBS oil
2 TBS butter
1 tsp sugar
Salt and black pepper to taste
¼ cup of water or vegetable stock

Steps:

  • Prepare your vegetables.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the oil and half the butter. Add the onions.
  • Cook and stir until the onion begins to soften. Add the cabbage.
  • Sprinkle with the sugar and season to taste with salt and black pepper.
  • Continue to cook, stirring it frequently, until the cabbage begins to soften. Add the water and cover.

1 medium onion - pared and sliced

1 small onion, peeled and thinly sliced (1 medium onion)
2 potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (4 potatoes)
1/2 small head of cabbage, cored and chopped (1 full head)
salt and black pepper to taste
water or chicken stock

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a skillet over medium high heat until it starts to foam. Add the onions, cook and stir for 5 to 8 minutes. Stir in the potatoes.
  • Cook, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes and onions are cooked through and beginning to brown. Remove to a bowl and keep warm.
  • Add the cabbage to the skillet. Season with some salt and pepper and add 1/4 cup (60ml) water or chicken stock. Cover and cook until the cabbage is tender (about 20 minutes). Keep an eye on it and stir it every so often.

Fried cabbage with bacon is more than just a side dish, it's a savory southern classic that will to turn cabbage haters into cabbage lovers! This quick and simple cabbage recipe is perfect for when you're craving comfort food like grandma used to make!

2 slices bacon
1/2 head green cabbage ((cored and chopped or sliced))
1/4 cup white onion ((chopped or diced))
1/4 tsp each, salt & pepper ((to taste))

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet or frying pan to medium heat. Add the bacon slices and cook until crisped, about 3 minutes on the first side then an additional 2 minutes once flipped. Remove from the pan and chop to add back in to the fried cabbage.
  • Leave the skillet with bacon grease at medium heat and add the chopped cabbage, diced onion, salt, and pepper (plus optional sugar) to the skillet. Fry until softened and tender, stirring frequently, for about 5 minutes.
  • Stir the chopped bacon back into the cabbage, then serve immediately.
