Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich image

See recipe video above. Tender perfectly seasoned slow cooker pulled pork smothered in a homemade BBQ Sauce (see notes for using store bought). Add a classic coleslaw then pile it high onto buns! Great food for gatherings - easy and good value to feed a crowd. Make this in the slow cooker, oven or pressure cooker.

Number Of Ingredients 19

2 tbsp brown sugar
2 tsp paprika powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp cumin powder
3/4 tsp mustard powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1.5 - 2.2 kg/ 3 - 4.5 lb pork shoulder or butt (, skinless and boneless (Note 1))
3/4 cup apple cider or apple juice ((Note 2))
1 quantity Coleslaw
6 - 8 bread rolls
1 cup pork juices from slow cooker, once cooked
2 1/2 cups ketchup
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
2/3 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp each black pepper, onion (or garlic powder), mustard powder
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Steps:

  • Mix together Rub then rub all over the pork. Optional: Marinate for 1 hour.
  • Place in the slow cooker and pour over apple cider. Slow cook for 8 hours on low or pressure cook for 1 hr 30 minutes on high. (Note 3)
  • Remove pork from liquid into a roasting pan. Reserve liquid.
  • OPTIONAL: Roast pork for 20 - 30 minutes at 180C/350F until browned (Note 4). Meanwhile, make BBQ Sauce.
  • Shred pork with forks - it should be fall apart tender (see video).
  • Toss in BBQ sauce - use as much as you like, the recipe makes enough to coat the pork well but not dripping in sauce, plus a bit extra on the side.
  • To make Pulled Pork Sandwiches, pile pork on warmed rolls and top with Coleslaw. I like to lay everything out for people to make their own.

This meal is one we always eat too much of. I recommend using Sweet Baby Ray's or Jack Daniel's original BBQ sauce. A good quality sauce makes a lot of difference. I serve it with my Sweet, Creamy Coleslaw #100526.

BBQ PULLED PORK SANDWICHES - SLOOOOW COOKED IN YOUR CROCK POT

BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches - Sloooow Cooked in Your Crock Pot image

The aroma that will fill your house is ALMOST as delicious as the tender shreds smokey, Bar-b-Que flavored pork shoulder. Serve on warmed potato hamburger buns, with your best coleslaw!

Provided by Pellerin

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 10h20m

Yield 16 cups, 16 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 17

4 -6 lbs pork shoulder (aka "Boston Butt", NOT loin. Have your butcher tie it for you, you want the STRINGY SHOULDER!)
1/4 cup Emeril's Original Essence (or your other favorite BBQ rub mixture.)
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 (15 ounce) can diced tomatoes (I like fire-roasted)
1/2 cup ketchup (Heinz)
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 cup dark brown sugar (packed)
1 cup red wine vinegar
1/2 cup prepared yellow mustard
1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons liquid smoke
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon garlic granules
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 (14 ounce) can low sodium beef broth

Steps:

  • Spread seasoning run liberally over all meat. Place rubbed roast into a large Zip-Lock plastic bag. Chill overnight, or at least several hours. Recommend you make sauce at the same time, so it's ready to go the next day.
  • Preheat regular oven to 225, or crock pot to medium/low.
  • In a large, heavy Dutch oven, heat oil to medium. Brown the seasoned roast until all sides are caramelized. Remove excess fat. Combine all SAUCE ingreadients, and pour over meat. Cover and cook for 8 - 10 hours.
  • Remove meat from pan. Place on large plat and cover with foil until cool enough to handle. Whilie meat is cooling, combine the cornstarch and beef broth with a fork, to remove lumps. Add this thickening agent to the sauce in the pan, to creat the BBQ sauce. Bring to a gentle boil, without the lid, and simmer until thickened. Taste for seasonings.
  • When meat is cool, shred meat by pulling with a fork. Add meat to sauce, and discared any fat and butcher's twine. Simmer approximately 30 minutes to let flavors meld. Serve as a sandwich on warm potato hamburger buns with coleslaw &/or potato salad. Many people like the slaw ON the sandwich. Freezes well.

SLOW COOKER BBQ PULLED PORK

Slow Cooker BBQ Pulled Pork image

If you've spent any time on Pinterest or food blogs, you've likely come across a recipe for three-ingredient barbecue pulled pork that can be made in the slow cooker. Methods and ingredients vary, but the recipe almost always calls for boneless pork shoulder, some sort of dark cola (usually Dr Pepper or root beer) and barbecue sauce. Dubious? We were too, so we asked the members of our NYT Cooking Community Facebook page if anyone had ever made it and if they liked it. We received more than 150 very opinionated responses. Many readers have come up with their own clever twists, like using coffee or beer in place of cola, adding onions or chipotles, rubbing the meat with a spice blend and searing the meat before cooking. We tried cooking it a few different ways and found we liked this adaptation best. It calls for a few more ingredients and an extra step or two, but it's got layers of flavor and it's still mostly fuss-free. (You can find the pressure-cooker version of this recipe here.)

Provided by Margaux Laskey

Categories     meat, sandwiches, main course

Time 10h

Yield 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
2 teaspoons hot or sweet smoked paprika
2 teaspoons salt, plus more to taste
1 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
3 to 4 pound boneless pork shoulder or pork butt, trimmed of most of its excess fat
2 tablespoons vegetable oil, plus additional for greasing
1 yellow onion, chopped (optional)
1 (12-ounce) can dark soda, like Dr Pepper, root beer, cola or birch beer
1/2 to 1 1/2 cups homemade or store-bought barbecue sauce
Hot sauce (optional)

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine the garlic and onion powders, smoked paprika, salt and black pepper. Rub the spice mixture all over the pork. If you have time, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours or up to overnight. If you don't, no worries; proceed to Step 2.
  • Lightly grease the crock of a slow cooker. Heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Sear the pork until golden brown on all sides, about 2 minutes each side. Add onion, if using, to the slow cooker. Add the pork on top of the onion. Pour soda over the pork and set the slow cooker to low for 6 to 8 hours, until the meat has collapsed and shreds easily.
  • Drain most of the liquid from the slow cooker and shred the meat directly in the pot. Add about 1/2 cup of the barbecue sauce and stir to combine. (At this point, if you like crisp bits in your pulled pork, you can spread the shredded pork on a sheet pan and place under a broiler for a couple minutes then return to the slow cooker.) Taste and add more barbecue sauce, hot sauce, salt or pepper, if desired. Serve with soft rolls and extra sauce on the side.
