GERMAN LIVERWURST DIP

German Liverwurst Dip image

For those of us - and I know you're out there! - who really do like liverwurst. I love the stuff! This recipe came from my grandparents.

Provided by Julesong

Categories     Sauces

Time 5m

Yield 1 3/4 cup, approx

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 cup liverwurst
1/2 cup sour cream or 1/2 cup plain yogurt
2 tablespoons dried minced onion flakes or 1/4 cup fresh minced onion (red onion could be nice)
2 tablespoons dill pickle relish
1 tablespoon prepared Dijon mustard, to taste
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
1/4-1/2 teaspoon garlic powder, to taste

Steps:

  • Blend the liverwurst and sour cream until smooth and creamy (adding extra sour cream to get to your preferred texture)- a food processor works well for this.
  • Add all the other ingredients, mixing well, then place in serving bowl.
  • Optional: if you want to be really decadent, top it with crumbled bacon.
  • May be served at room temperature or chilled; makes about 1 3/4 cups of dip.
  • Dippers: cucumber, celery, bell pepper strips, radishes, cauliflower, asparagus, cocktail rye bread, lavasch crackers, Wasa, etc.

BAVARIAN PARTY DIP

Bavarian Party Dip image

This is a spread I have been making for many years. It goes great with crackers (Saltines are my favorite) or with thinly sliced cocktail breads. (I'm not really sure why it was ever called a "dip"... it is definitely a "spread"). It is a very quick recipe and super easy to make. Can be made a day ahead and refrigerated for ease of serving at a party, just let sit out of the fridge for about 20 minutes before serving to soften a bit. Enjoy!

Time 10m

Yield 1 1/2 cups

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/2 cup minced onion
4 ounces cream cheese (softened)
1 lb braunschweiger sausage (I like Dubuque, but your favorite brand will work)
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
crackers (your favorite) or cocktail bread, for serving (your favorite)

Steps:

  • Heat oil in small fry pan and saute the minced onions 8-10 minutes over medium-low heat, stirring frequently until softened. Remove from heat and drain. Set aside.
  • Remove Braunschweiger from its wrapper and mix it in a bowl with the softened cream cheese. Once combined well, add in sauteed onion and black pepper.
  • Serve along side your choice of crackers or cocktail bread (or even try some raw veggies with it).
  • Enjoy!

BAVARIAN BRAUNSCHWEIGER DIP

Bavarian Braunschweiger Dip image

If you call it "braunschweiger," people are more likely to try it. The "liver" in "liverwurst" turns a lot of people off.
