  • Have the correct materials. Kevin Lamming, Project Consultant at Artisans of Devizes (opens in new tab), says installing backsplash ideas for kitchens is relatively straightforward, but you need to be prepared with the correct materials.
  • Work out the tile layout. Kamila Chalfin, marketing and brand manager at Tile Giant (opens in new tab), says: 'This is done to ensure that as many full tiles are laid as possible, with minimum cutting and waste of tiles.
  • Seal the surface. 'If you’re tiling on to fresh plasterboard, make sure it is sealed with a primer following the manufacturer’s instructions,' advises Damla Turgut, founder of Otto Tiles & Design (opens in new tab)
  • Clean and fill. If the wall already has a couple of coats of paint, this will act as a primer. 'Make sure the wall surface is clean of dust and loose debris,' says Damla.
  • Add adhesive. Damla says: 'Apply a high-quality adhesive to the wall starting at the bottom, nearest to your work surface. Make sure you add a generous and even layer of adhesive using a notched trowel.
  • Start layering your tiles. Start to apply your first row of tiles using a moderate even pressure. Damla's top tip? ' Work along in rows using tile spaces on all four sides of each tile to ensure gaps are uniform, and use a spirit level to make sure they’re level.
  • Use a tile cutter for wall edges. Where there is not enough room at wall edges, measure the size of the tile you need and, using a tile cutter, score a line along the tile and apply light pressure to break the tile along the score.
  • Get rid of excess adhesive. Wipe off any excess adhesive before it dries with a clean, damp cloth.
  • Get the grout out. Once the adhesive has dried, you can grout between the tiles. Remove the spacers and apply/push the grout generously into the gaps between each tile, using a trowel.
  • Clean up and finish off. As your grout dries you may notice a powdery finish across your tiles – this is just a film of dried grout. Once you are happy that the grout has completely dried, you can wipe down the tiles to reveal the shiny, end result.

  • The square footage determines how much tile is necessary for tiling a backsplash in a kitchen. Proper measurements will help keep tile installation costs down. Measure your wall to determine the amount of tile you need. If you only have one section to cover, multiply the width and height of the wall to get the square footage.;
  • Remove all appliances and cookware from your countertop before you start to tile a backsplash. You may need to move the stove slightly away from the wall so you can easily place tile behind it. Disconnect the stove for added safety.
  • Patch any holes with spackling paste and use sandpaper to lightly smooth the surface of your work area.
  • Place the tile across the wall and mark your starting and end points. Your starting point depends on the most viewable area of the wall.

  • Determine where you’ll have to cut tiles on your wall. You may need to cut tiles around outlets, light switch covers, or tile around a window.
  • Remove outlet and light switch covers. It’s illegal to tile over outlets; closing off electrical outlets in your wall can be a fire hazard. Also, you won’t pass any home inspections.
  • Turn off power to your kitchen outlets and switches. While tiling you don’t want any risk of electrical shock. Turn off the power as a safety precaution.
  • Apply duct tape around the edge of the backsplash and over switches and outlets. This way, when you apply your mortar in the next step, it doesn’t get everywhere.
  • Clean your wall thoroughly. Before you apply mortar and install a backsplash, scrub the wall clean of any grease or stains. Any non-abrasive household cleaner will work great for this.
  • Apply thinset mortar to the backsplash wall using a tile trowel. This premixed thinset from Amazon works great. Spread it on the wall evenly with a tile trowel (here’s one from Amazon).
  • Secure tiles to the wall using a mallet or grout float. Some backsplash tiles come in sections with spacers included. In this case, start in the center of the room and apply sections of tile outward, cutting where necessary.
  • Once you have laid out all your backsplash tiles, wipe off any excess mortar. You can use a rag or a damp sponge.
  • Remove the spacers from your tiles. It’s important to not remove the spacers too early. If the mortar is not completely dry, the tiles may move around.
