- How it works. Amlodipine may be used to treat heart conditions such as angina and high blood pressure. Amlodipine inhibits the influx of calcium ions across cardiac (heart) and smooth muscle causing relaxation of these muscles and dilation (widening).
- Upsides. May be used for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension), alone or in combination with other agents for high blood pressure. May be used as an ongoing treatment to relieve symptoms such as chest pain in people with chronic stable angina, or angina due to coronary artery spasm.
- Downsides. If you are between the ages of 18 and 60, take no other medication or have no other medical conditions, side effects you are more likely to experience include
- Bottom Line. Amlodipine is a heart medication that may be used for the treatment of angina or to lower blood pressure but it can cause edema in the ankles or feet.
- Tips. May be taken with or without food. The manufacturer states that there is no concern about taking amlodipine with grapefruit juice. Be careful when going from sitting to standing as blood pressure may drop.
- Response and effectiveness. Peak concentrations of amlodipine occur between 6 and 12 hours of an oral dose. The effect of amlodipine lasts for approximately 24 hours.
- Interactions. Medicines that interact with amlodipine may either decrease its effect, affect how long it works for, increase side effects, or have less of an effect when taken with amlodipine.
THE 10 AMLODIPINE SIDE EFFECTS YOU SHOULD WATCH FOR
From goodrx.com
- Swelling in your legs or ankles. Swelling of the legs or ankles (edema) is one of the most common amlodipine side effects. It happens because amlodipine dilates your blood vessels, which improves blood flow.
- Fatigue. Amlodipine may make you feel tired or fatigued. This was reported in about 5% of people taking it in clinical trials. Unlike certain other side effects, this doesn’t seem to be related to the dose you’re taking.
- Dizziness. Dizziness is another amlodipine side effect that’s more likely to happen with higher doses. This can happen as your body adjusts to the blood pressure changes from your medication, especially within the first few days of taking it.
- Fast or irregular heartbeat. Fast or irregular heartbeats (palpitations) can be a side effect of amlodipine. When it happens, your chest may feel like it’s pounding or fluttering.
- Nausea. Many medications can cause nausea, and amlodipine is no exception. But this is usually mild and rarely causes vomiting. You can take amlodipine with or without food.
- Flushing. Flushing isn’t the most common amlodipine side effect. But it can cause your skin to look red or feel warm to the touch. Some people experience it as a result of blood vessels widening.
- Abdominal pain. Although it’s not particularly common, amlodipine can cause abdominal pain. But this could be a sign of pancreatitis if it’s accompanied by other symptoms, like nausea and vomiting, fever, and/or jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes).
- Drowsiness. Drowsiness is a possible amlodipine side effect, affecting less than 2% of people taking it. Because of this, it’s best to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you see how the medication affects your body.
- Low blood pressure. Low blood pressure (hypotension) is possible with any medication used to treat high blood pressure. Because amlodipine can take time to start working, low blood pressure is unlikely to happen right after taking it.
- Worsening chest pain or heart attack. In rare cases, amlodipine can worsen chest pain, or even raise the risk of a heart attack. This risk seems to be highest in people with severe CAD after starting amlodipine or raising their dose.
