AMERICAN CHOP SUEY
Steps:
- Gather the ingredients.
- Cook the pasta in boiling salted water following the package directions.
- Drain in a colander and rinse under hot water. Set aside.
- In a large, deep skillet or saucepan, heat the vegetable oil and butter over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper, if using. Cook, stirring until onion is softened and edges are lightly browned.
- Add the ground beef and cook, stirring and breaking up, until the beef is cooked through and no longer pink.
- Add the garlic and garlic powder and cook, stirring for 1 to 2 minutes longer.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, sugar, and pepper. Cook, stirring, until the sauce mixture begins to boil. Taste and add salt, as needed. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Add the drained macaroni to the sauce, mix well, and heat through. Serve and enjoy.

Steps:
- 1. Heat the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, for about 1 minute. Then add the ground beef and continue to cook, stirring and breaking up the chunks of meat with a spoon. Cook until the meat is no longer pink, about 7 minutes. Sprinkle the herbs and pepper over the meat, add salt to taste, and mix in well.
- 2. Add the canned tomatoes with their juices, the tomato sauce, paste, and juice. Add sugar to taste. Simmer while you cook the pasta.
- 3. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil over high heat. Add the macaroni and cook, stirring occasionally, until al dente. Drain. Mix the macaroni into the chop suey. Serve hot.

- In a large Dutch oven, heat oil and butter over medium heat until butter is melted and oil is shimmering. Add onion, bell pepper, salt and pepper and sweat until vegetables are soft, 8-10 minutes.
- Add ground beef and spices and saute until no pink remains, 5-6 minutes.
- Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, sugar and cinnamon. Stir well and bring to a boil. Reduce to a simmer, cover and cook, stirring occasionally, 1 hour or until well-thickened.
- Meanwhile, cook macaroni according to package directions, leaving it slightly underdone. When done, stir macaroni into sauce. Stir well, adjust salt and pepper to taste, and let cook 5-10 minutes until flavors meld.
- Serve topped with sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and chopped scallions.
