I love using the air fryer for burgers, especially in the winter when the grill is not as easily accessible. The burgers get hit with that direct hot air from the air fryer fan and the grease drips away into the bottom drawer of the air fryer.

1 pound meatloaf mix (ground beef, veal and pork)
1 tablespoon minced onion
⅓ cup chopped pepperoni or mini pepperoni slices
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon salt
freshly ground black pepper
1 cup pizza sauce
6 ounces sliced mozzarella cheese
4 crusty round rolls (ciabatta rolls or focaccia bread)

Steps:

  • Place the meatloaf mixture, minced onion, pepperoni, tomato paste, Italian seasoning salt and pepper in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly until well combined. Divide the meat into 4 equal portions and then form the hamburgers, being careful not to over-handle the meat. One good way to do this is to throw the meat back and forth between your hands like a baseball, packing the meat each time you catch it. Flatten the balls into patties, making an indentation or divot in the center of each patty. This will help keep the burger flat as it cooks.
  • Split the rolls in half and brush the cut side with a little olive oil.
  • Pre-heat the air fryer to 370ºF.
  • Air-fry the burger patties for 15 minutes, flipping them over halfway through the cooking time. Spoon a little pizza sauce on each burger and top with the sliced mozzarella cheese. Air-fry at 370°F for 3 more minutes until the cheese has melted.
  • Remove the burgers from the air fryer and let them rest. Place the rolls, cut side up into air fryer. Air-fry at 380°F for 2 to 3 minutes to toast the rolls.
  • Transfer the rested burgers to the toasted rolls, sprinkle a little more Italian seasoning on top and serve immediately.

I like the fact that by air frying my burgers I avoid grease splattering all over my stove top. I make 1/2-pound burger patties but you can easily make them into four 1/4-pound patties. Serve with all the fixings on the side.

1 slice white sandwich bread
1 ½ tablespoons low-fat milk
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 pound ground beef
2 slices Cheddar cheese
2 brioche buns, halved

Steps:

  • Preheat the air fryer to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Cut crust off sandwich bread and tear bread into small pieces. Mix with milk, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a bowl until well incorporated. Add ground beef and mix well. Shape into 2 equal patties. Make an indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb; this prevents them from puffing up.
  • Place in the air fryer basket and cook for 8 to 10 minutes. Flip patties over and continue cooking on the second side, 8 to 10 minutes more. Top each patty with cheese and place back in the air fryer until cheese has started to melt, 20 to 30 seconds. Place on buns.

1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 can (15 ounces) pizza sauce
1 can (4 ounces) mushroom stems and pieces, drained
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
1-1/2 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink, 3-5 minutes, breaking into crumbles. Drain. Stir in the pizza sauce, mushrooms, sugar and oregano; mix well. Spoon onto buns; sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. , Place on ungreased baking sheets. Broil 4 in. from the heat until cheese is melted, 2 minutes. , To freeze for quick lunches later, place the split and toasted buns on a baking sheet. Spoon the meat mixture onto buns; freeze for 1 hour. Transfer to freezer-safe airtight containers., To use frozen burgers: Thaw completely in the refrigerator. Sprinkle with cheese. Broil 4 in. from the heat until heated through and cheese is melted, 2 minutes.
