AIR FRYER JALAPEñO POPPERS

Air Fryer Jalapeño Poppers image

We have a high bar for jalapeño poppers, and this easy air-fryer version surpasses it. In our books the jalapeño itself needs to be cooked through but still sturdy enough to support all the filling. This recipe calls for large jalapeños, which fit more filling than smaller ones and tend to be sturdier. The molten cheese will not spill out of these poppers thanks to the way they are filled and rested for a few minutes in the air fryer after cooking. Finally, the breadcrumb coating remains crispy for a very long time because of the addition of crushed kettle potato chips.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     appetizer

Time 20m

Yield 8 servings (24 poppers)

Number Of Ingredients 7

12 large jalapeño peppers (at least 4 inches in length)
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
5 ounces extra-sharp yellow Cheddar, grated
1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs seasoned with Pecorino Romano
1/2 cup finely crushed kettle potato chips
Nonstick cooking spray
2 tablespoons bacon bits or freshly cooked, crumbled bacon

Steps:

  • Working with disposable rubber gloves to protect your skin, halve each jalapeño lengthwise, slicing through the stem. Remove the seeds and white ribs with a spoon or small melon baller. Arrange the halves on a baking sheet rounded sides down. If any of the halves tilt sideways instead of standing straight up, slice a sliver of skin off the rounded side, making sure not to cut through to the cavity, so they sit level.
  • Add the cream cheese and Cheddar to a small bowl and mix together with a rubber spatula until combined. Stir together the breadcrumbs and potato chips in a medium bowl.
  • Divide the cream cheese mixture among the jalapeño halves, smoothing it down with your finger or the back of a butter knife so the filling is level with the top of the jalapeno, not mounded. (You may have extra filling depending on how large your jalapenos are.) Firmly press the breadcrumb mixture over the cream cheese to fully coat. Spray the breadcrumbs with nonstick spray.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400 degrees F and set to cook for 4 minutes. Arrange the poppers in a single layer in the basket so they're not touching, working in batches if necessary. Air fry the poppers without opening the basket to check on them. When the air fryer turns off, let the poppers sit in the basket for another 4 minutes without opening the machine. (this will allow the poppers to cool slightly and the cheese to set so it doesn't slide out-don't worry, it'll still be gooey.)
  • Carefully open the air fryer basket and remove each popper with a spatula. Serve the poppers sprinkled with the bacon.

JALAPEñO POPPER BAKE FROM 'EVERY DAY EASY AIR FRYER'

Jalapeño Popper Bake from 'Every Day Easy Air Fryer' image

JALAPENO POPPER BAKE is excerpted from EVERY DAY EASY AIR FRYER © 2018 by Urvashi Pitre. Photography © 2018 by Ghazalle Badiozamani. Reproduced by permission of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. All rights reserved. - You can never have too much bacon, nor too much cheese. If your household is like any of the others that have enjoyed this dip, I can tell you that it will disappear in minutes. It's quite substantial, so it needs a good, thick chip or melba toast for scooping-pass on the thin potato chips for this one. Or, you know, a spoon dipped straight into the pan works, too. I'm not judging!

Provided by Food.com

Categories     Pork

Time 30m

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 14

vegetable oil, for greasing
1 1/2 lbs chicken thighs (boneless, skinless, diced)
1/2 cup diced bell pepper
1 -4 jalapeno, minced
2 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup shredded Mexican blend cheese
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
4 slices bacon
1/4 cup chopped scallion, for garnish
celery rib, for serving
celery rib, baby carrots, bell pepper strips, broccoli florets, cauliflower florets, for serving
tortilla chips, for serving

Steps:

  • 1. Grease a 7 1/2-inch barrel cake pan (see Note) with oil.
  • 2. In a large bowl, stir together the chicken, bell pepper, jalapeños, cream cheese, Mexican cheese blend, chili powder, garlic salt, and salt until thoroughly combined. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan.
  • 3. Cut each bacon slice into three or four pieces. Arrange the bacon in a circle on top of the chicken mixture. Place the pan in the air-fryer basket. Set the air fryer to 400°F for 15 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and the chicken is cooked through.
  • 4. Sprinkle with the scallions and serve with vegetables and/or tortilla chips for dipping.
  • NOTE: This recipe was written to be made in an extra-deep 7 1/2-inch round pan called a barrel pan or cake barrel, which is sold as an accessory for air fryers with a capacity of 5.3 quarts or more. If your fryer is smaller than that, use a 6-inch round cake pan with 4-inch sides and increase the cooking time by 5 to 8 minutes.

  • Bring 3 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan over high. Add jalapeños; cook, stirring occasionally for 3 minutes. Transfer jalapeños to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process; let stand for about 30 seconds. Transfer jalapeños to a plate lined with paper towels. Carefully make a slit vertically along the side of each jalapeño. Remove seeds and veins (gloves are best for this!). Rinse and dry thoroughly.
  • Stir together Cheddar, cream cheese, and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt in a medium bowl until combined. Fill each pepper with about 2 teaspoons of cheese filling; close slit to seal in cheese.
  • Place flour in 1 shallow dish, eggs in a second shallow dish, and panko and remaining 1 teaspoon salt in a third dish. Dip stuffed jalapeños in eggs, allowing excess to drip off. Coat lightly in flour. Return coated jalapeños to egg dish for a second dip, and finally coat in panko.
  • Turn the air-fryer to 375°F, and allow it to preheat 3 to 5 minutes. Coat the basket and breaded jalapeños with cooking spray. Add 4 jalapeños at a time to air-fryer. Cook until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes, turning half way through. Repeat with remaining jalapeños.
