To my taste the grapefruit makes this more refreshing than plain limeade,it has way more flavor,and it's just as easy to make.Even if you don't like grapefruit ,you should try this;the grapefruit doesn't overpower.You really have to try this.Cook time is chill time.Originally from The Practical Encyclopedia Of Mexican Cooking by Jane Milton.

12 limes
3 oranges
2 grapefruits, preferably ruby reds
6 tablespoons sugar
2 1/2 cups water

Steps:

  • Juice all fruits on a citrus juicer,straining out seeds.
  • Add sugar and stir well to dissolve.Add water and stir.
  • Chill for at least an hour before serving.

Aguas frescas, water-based fruit drinks, are a cool way to make your fresh fruit go further. Try this recipe with watermelon, mango, or whatever you have.

½ cup sugar
4 cups water
4 cups chopped fruit (watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple, papaya, strawberries, oranges, peaches, mangoes, or any combination)
Ice cubes
Lemon or lime wedges (optional)

Steps:

  • Stir the sugar and water together in a large pitcher until the sugar dissolves. Measure out 1 cup. Puree the fruit and the 1 cup sugar water in a blender. Pour the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer back into the pitcher with the sugar water, mashing with a whisk or wooden spoon to eliminate any pulp.
  • Taste and add more sugar, if desired. Serve over ice, with a lemon or lime wedge, if desired.

Fresh fruit waters, or Aguas de Frutas, made with crushed or blended fruit are a common and popular drink all over Mexico. This recipe is extremely flavorful and refreshing, especially when fresh strawberries are in season.

4 cups strawberries, sliced
1 cup white sugar
8 cups cold water
1 lime, cut into 8 wedges
8 fresh mint sprigs

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, mix together sliced strawberries, sugar, and 1 cup of water. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for 4 hours.
  • Remove the strawberry mixture from the refrigerator and pour into a blender. Blend on high until smooth. Pour the blended berry mixture through a wire mesh strainer set over a large mixing bowl; discard the pulp and seeds.
  • Add the remaining 7 cups cold water to the pureed strawberries and mix well. Place the Aqua de Fresa in the refrigerator to chill for several hours or pour over ice and serve immediately. Garnish with lime slices or mint leaves.
