XNI-PEC (DOG'S NOSE) - HABANERO SALSA RECIPE

Xni-Pec (Dog's Nose) - Habanero Salsa Recipe image

Xni-Pec is a Yucatan salsa made with fresh habanero peppers, tomato, onion, sour orange juice and more. It packs some heat, and as the name implies, might make you sweat like a dog's nose.

Number Of Ingredients 6

Ingredients

3 habanero peppers (chopped (or more, as desired))
1 medium tomato (chopped)
1 small white onion (chopped)
3 tablespoons fresh sour orange juice
¼ cup chopped cilantro
Salt to taste

Steps:

Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl. Mix well. Taste and adjust for salt.
Cover and refrigerate overnight for the flavors to mingle and develop. Serve!

I made this a few years ago for a hockey party. The men loved it the women complained about the heat--you decide. Caution: Extremely hot.

Number Of Ingredients 4

Ingredients

4 habanero peppers, seeds and stems removed and diced
4 limes, juice of
1 onion, diced
1 tomatoes, diced

Steps:

Soak the diced onion in the lime juice for at least 30 minutes.
Add all the other ingredients and mix.
Salt to taste.
Serve with grilled fish or grilled chicken.

Halve the habaneros, remove the stem, pith/veins and seeds, and dice them finely (be careful and use disposable gloves if your hands are sensitive), then add to a mixing bowl.
Tip: to make it easier to extract the lime juice, microwave them for 15 seconds or roll them firmly on the counter to soften them.
Let the Xnipec stand for at least ½ hour or overnight for the flavors to combine. Season with a little salt just before serving.
