WITCHES' BREW WITH BROOMSTICKS

Witches' Brew with Broomsticks image

While growing up, my boys enjoyed helping me make this beverage with "broomsticks." Now I use the recipe with my grandchildren. -Paula Marchesi, Lenhartsville, Pennsylvania

Provided by Taste of Home

Time 35m

Yield 8 servings.

Number Of Ingredients 7

8 orange candy slices
8 cinnamon sticks (5 inches)
8 pieces black shoestring licorice (10 inches)
1/2 cup water
1/3 cup red-hot candies
6 cups milk
3/4 cup instant chocolate drink mix

Steps:

  • For broomsticks, on a lightly sugared surface, roll each orange slice into a 1/4-in.-thick triangle. With wet scissors, snip bottoms of triangles to resemble broom bristles. Wrap pointed end of each around a cinnamon stick. Coil a licorice piece around the top of each orange slice to secure to cinnamon stick; set aside. , In a large saucepan, bring water and red-hots to a boil, stirring frequently until dissolved. Whisk in milk and chocolate drink mix. Cook, uncovered, over medium heat until hot. Pour into cups or mugs. Serve with broomstick stirrers.

Categories     appetizer

Time 15m

Yield 12 brooms

Number Of Ingredients 4

6 sticks string cheese
12 pretzel sticks
6 long or 12 short thin chives
1 to 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard

Steps:

  • Cut each piece of string cheese in half so you have 2 shorter sticks. Working one at a time, make 4 cuts vertically in one end of the cheese sticks, stopping about 3/4 inch from the top. Roll the cheese so the cuts are not parallel to the cutting board, and make 2 or 3 more cuts to form the bristles of the broom. Press a pretzel stick into the uncut end of the cheese stick to make the handle. Tie a chive in the middle of top (uncut) end of the cheese stick; this holds the broom head together. Repeat for the remaining brooms.
  • Spread the mustard haphazardly on the bottom of a black or white plate. Stand the brooms up on their bristles as if they are sweeping up the mustard.

Spook your Halloween guests with this "steaming" pineapple-lime cocktail from Food Network.

Provided by Sandra Lee

Categories     beverage

Time 20m

Yield 12 to 16 servings

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 (6-ounce) package lime gelatin
2 cups boiling water
3 cups chilled pineapple juice
1 (2 liter) bottle chilled lemon-lime soft drink or ginger ale
2 cups chilled vodka, optional

Steps:

  • Pour the gelatin mix into a large bowl. Slowly stir in the boiling water. Stir at least 2 minutes, until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Stir in the pineapple juice. Let cool to room temperature.
  • Wearing heavy duty gloves or using tongs, place the block of dry ice in the bottom of the cauldron. (Dry ice will burn skin, so handle it with gloves and tongs and keep it away from kids and pets!)
  • Use an ice pick to break the block into smaller chunks, if necessary.
  • Fill the cauldron with just enough water to cover the dry ice. It will begin to "steam."
  • Place the punch bowl inside the cauldron, on top of the dry ice. The cauldron will appear to be magically smoking.
  • Entrap the sterilized rubber hand between the cauldron and the punch bowl, squeezing it tight so the hand appears to be reaching out of the mist for help. Hot-glue the hand to the cauldron, if necessary, to hold it in place.
  • Carefully pour the drink mixture into the punch bowl. Slowly add the chilled vodka and lemon-lime soda or ginger ale. Stir gently to mix.
