  • Amy's Kitchen Products. The organic food company Amy's Kitchen has been a lifeline for many of us during the quarantine. A perfect demonstration of that came when a shortage of Amy's Roasted Vegetables Pizza sent loyal customers into a tizzy.
  • Progresso Soups. General Mills Inc., the company that produces Cheerios and Progresso soups among other things, announced they have cut 40 types of soups from their lineup during the pandemic.
  • Kraft Heinz Products. Kraft Heinz is another company whose portfolio of products is getting a pruning this year. The company had been struggling to keep up with competition across 56 grocery categories they're currently in, especially as consumer preferences shift away from processed foods.
  • Frito Lay Snacks. PepsiCo Inc. had decided to shelf the production of about 20% of its products, including some Frito-Lay snacks, and focus on products that were in high demand during the pandemic.
  • Odwalla Smoothies. As we've reported last week, Coca Cola is discontinuing their juice and smoothie line Odwalla. The announcement came on July 1 and the company is moving quickly—by the end of the month, you'll no longer be able to find these products on grocery store shelves.
  • Jif Power Ups. J.M. Smucker Co., which owns Jif, has pivoted away from novelty peanut-based snacks this year in order to focus on their main money-makers like peanut butter.
  • Aunt Jemima Products. Aunt Jemima brand is no more. While the parent company Quaker will still produce their famous maple syrup and pancake mix, the products will be sold under a different name and completely reimagined branding.
  • Eskimo Pie. After nearly a 100 years of Eskimo Pie, Dreyer's Ice Cream announced they would be changing the name of the ice cream product, in order to shift away from the outdated derogatory term describing the native people of the Arctic.
  • Uncle Ben's Products. Uncle Ben's products are getting a new name and branding, too. "We recognize that now is the right time to evolve the Uncle Ben's brand, including its visual brand identity, which we will do," a company spokesperson told the New York Times.
  • Mrs. Butterworth's Products. Conagra Brands announced it would be reviewing the complete branding and packaging of Mrs. Butterworth's products. The bottle shape of their famous syrup has long been associated with a racial stereotype by its critics.

  • Frito-Lay. Even as consumers stocked up on snacks to stay at home, PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay got rid of some of America’s favorite chip flavors. Lay's Lightly Salted potato chips and Crunchy Xxtra Flamin' Hot Cheetos are now back in production, CNN reported in early June, but Tostitos Multigrain Scoops tortilla chips were still missing from store shelves.
  • Progresso. Progresso offers nearly 90 varieties of soup, including fresh flavors like Chicken Cheese Enchilada and Chicken & Orzo with Lemon. Parent company General Mills is trashing almost half of them.
  • Amy’s Kitchen. Vegans were left scrambling for a new frozen, cheese-free treat when Amy’s Roasted Vegetable Pizza suddenly disappeared. The organic meal maker halted production on the pizza flavor since its assembly-line production process didn’t allow for social distancing.
  • Coca-Cola. Sorry, smoothie lovers. Coca-Cola announced in early July that it would ax Odwalla by the end of the month. John Hackett, president of Coca-Cola's Minute Maid business, told CNN that the decision to end the juice and smoothie brand "comes at a time when it is more important than ever to evaluate where we can improve efficiencies in our business and operations.”
  • Mondelez. Many people are still spending their entire workday a few feet from the pantry. Now cookie and cracker titan Mondelez plans to kill a quarter of its products in order to maintain its supply flow.
  • Campbell's. Campbell, like Progresso, has seen its soup sales soar as consumers hoard nonperishables for quick work-from-home lunches. The canned soup and snack brand cut back on fringe flavors as demand for classics like cream of mushroom and Goldfish surged, CNN reports.
  • Nestlé. Nestlé, the world's largest food and beverage company, isn’t exempt from the pressure to meet demand. The corporation is permanently dropping some Lean Cuisine varieties, the Wall Street Journal reports.
  • Bumble Bee. This company was already going through tumultuous times, ever since it pleaded guilty to a tuna price-fixing scandal in 2017. It filed for bankruptcy two years later and was bought out by a Taiwanese tuna supplier.
  • Costco. While the warehouse giant isn’t necessarily considered a “big brand” in the dessert department, shoppers were nonetheless outraged at the loss of Costco’s half-sheet cakes.
  • J.M. Smucker. This iconic American manufacturer went back to basics to keep its jams, jellies and peanut butter on store shelves. Less popular varieties had to be "de-prioritized during COVID-19 given unprecedented demand," the J.M.

14 DISCONTINUED CANNED FOODS YOU'LL NEVER SEE AGAIN

From eatthis.com
  • Franco American Macaroni and Cheese. Canned mac and cheese doesn't sound particularly appealing, especially if you prefer your pasta al dente, but the Franco canned line of pastas (think spaghetti and meatball) was popular in the 70s and 80s with parents who were just trying to get dinner on the table.
  • Pac Man Pasta. Another canned pasta dish, this one a marketing tie-in with the popular 80s video game. Featuring vaguely Pac Man and ghost-shaped pasta in something called "golden chicken sauce" or tomato sauce (with or without meatballs), this pasta is worth revisiting for the over-the-top 80s ad alone.
  • Chef Boyardee Roller Coaster. Canned pasta definitely had a big moment in the 80s, and this mix of wavy pasta and kid-sized meatballs was another popular favorite.
  • Pumpkin Spice Spam. We've seen a lot of unusual foods flavored with pumpkin spice, but Spam might take the cake (meat cake?). This limited-edition flavor came out in 2019, and while it's definitely not for everyone, it apparently sold out in a matter of hours!
  • Campbell's Pepper Pot Soup. This classic soup was likely brought to the U.S. by enslaved people from the Caribbean. Tripe, veal, and vegetables combine to make a thick, hearty soup, and while Campbell's no longer sells it by the can, you can still make it at home.
  • Progresso Soup Flavors. Not all Progresso canned soups have exited store shelves, however, there are a lot fewer offerings. Back in 2020, the brand decided to tighten up its product offerings and cut 40 types of soup.
  • Trader Joe's Pet Food. Production issues signaled the end of a few of Trader Joe's animal eats—and unfortunately, it's for good. Early in 2022, the company released a statement that some canned pet foods would no longer be sold due to inconsistent supply issues.
  • Campbell's Chunky Soup Flavors. Marketed during NFL games for manly men who liked their soup full of chunks of meat and veggies (uh, who doesn't?) , Campbell's Chunky line was a big hit at first, but over the years they've canceled a few flavors, including Meatball Bustin' Sausage and Rigatoni Soup as well as the Philly-Style Cheesesteak Soup.
  • Snow Crop Juices. Possibly the first frozen brand to launch frozen orange juice concentrate, Snow Crop made a big impact on American breakfasts back in the 1940s.
  • Pudding in a Can. Before Snack Packs came in plastic cups, lunchbox pudding cups were served in cans in the 1970s. RELATED: We Tasted 10 Chicken Noodle Soups & This Is the Best.
