DEHUMIDIFIER NOT COLLECTING WATER? 13 CAUSES & SOLUTIONS

From airsmartly.com
  • Low humidity level. When winter arrives, or if you live in an arid region, the indoor humidity level can drop to or remain low. If you run a dehumidifier in this situation, it may stop working quickly because there isn’t enough moisture in the air for it to extract.
  • Oversized dehumidifier. Dehumidifier capacity is an important factor to consider. If you put a unit capable of covering 3000 square feet in a 500 square foot room.
  • Wrong placement. Both refrigerant and desiccant models require the use of a fan. Adequate airflow is required for your machine to function properly. As a result, you should place it properly, such as in the center of the room, to ensure that the machine works properly.
  • Frozen chilled coil (compressor model) As previously stated, a compressor dehumidifier is not suitable for use at low temperatures. When cold air enters the machine, moisture on the coil can easily freeze, preventing subsequent moisture from condensing.
  • Failed freeze protection function (compressor model) You still can find frozen coil in a modern dehumidifier and the culprit is not the temperature this time.
  • Dirty coils (compressor model) With time, the coil can accumulate dirt and dust. When more and more buildups show on it, it will impede the condensation process, collecting less or no water.
  • Dirty air filter. Dehumidifiers take advantage of fans to suck up and expel air. As a result, less air will get into the machine when the air filter is blocked.
  • Stuck float switch. If your dehumidifier keeps collecting water without a drain pipe, then it can overflow in the end. To prevent this from happening, dehumidifiers use a float switch to detect the water level in the tank and shut off automatically when a certain level is reached.
  • Clogged pipe. Some dehumidifiers can work with a drain pipe. However, the pipe can clog due to the improper placement and residue over time. This will make the water remain in the machine, and when the tank is full, the machine will stop collecting water.
  • Overloaded compressor (compressor model) Most dehumidifiers today have an overload protection feature. The machine will shut off when the compressor is overloaded and stop collecting water.

11 REASONS WHY YOUR DEHUMIDIFIER IS NOT COLLECTING WATER

From coldhotair.com
  • Float switch is stuck. The float switch is what turns off your dehumidifier when the water collection tank is full. Once the water reaches a certain level, the float switch disconnects from the control board.
  • Drain pipes are clogged. If you are using a drain pipe or a garden hose to empty your dehumidifier, they may be clogged. Check if you have a good connection with the garden hose, if the connection is loose, then take a pair of pliers and make sure to tighten it.
  • Air filter is dirty. If the air filter is so dirty that the air blowing out cannot escape, then your dehumidifier will stop working. Most dehumidifier filters are washable, so take it out according to your manufacturer’s specifications and then give it a good cleaning.
  • Coils are dirty. Dehumidifier coils can get dirty over time as they work to dehumidify the air coming in. They can have grime and dust build up from what isn’t caught from the air filter.
  • Evaporator coils are frozen. If your dehumidifier is operating in above 65F temperatures and the coils are frozen, it’s indicative of the blower wheel or fan blade being broken.
  • Compressor motor is overloaded. If your compressor motor is having issues, your entire dehumidifier will cease to function. It circulates refrigerant fluid through the coils and if it has any issues or frost start to develop, your dehumidifier will be overloaded.
  • Capacitors are bad. If you’ve verified that your dehumidifier is working in its ideal environment and is still not collecting water, the capacitor that controls the compressor circuit may have failed.
  • Fan motor is dead. A dehumidifier removes humidity when moist air flows through the dehumidifier onto cold coils. If your fan motor is not working, then your dehumidifier will stop collecting water.
  • Electronic Control Board is Faulty. Dehumidifiers have an electronic control board that lets the unit communicate with the compressor and fan motor. If your control board’s sensors fail, then it will no longer be able to sense the relative humidity and won’t turn on.
  • Refrigerant fluid is low. If the refrigerant fluid is low, then your dehumidifier will not be able to cool and condense the humid air in your home. The coils are tightly seale d, but as time goes on tiny cracks can form leading to a refrigerant fluid leak.
