15 CREATIVE EXERCISES TO FILL YOUR SKETCHBOOK | MISS MUSTARD SEED
From missmustardseed.com
- have a no-pressure sketchbook. This isn’t so much an exercise, but an important tip. I love having beautiful sketchbooks…vintage books, leatherbound, handmade, and filled with beautiful (expensive) papers.
- blind contours. Nothing says “no-pressure” like not even looking at what you’re doing. It’s the perfect excuse to not care at all what the finished result looks like and it’s a surprising way to finetune your hand-eye coordination.
- draw with your non-dominate hand. This is another one of the sketchbook exercises that work on your hand/eye coordination and observation skills, but challenges your brain in a new way.
- composition studies. I think composition studies are so fun! Just draw out of a few squares or rectangles and play around with different composition ideas.
- continuous line drawing. I have grown to love doing continuous line drawings because they also force me to abstract shapes and the sketches always end up looking so cool!
- value studies. A value study is very similar and almost overlaps with composition studies, but you are focusing specifically on the lights and darks of a subject.
- add some color. When I want to work a little bit in my sketchbook, but I don’t have a lot of time or creative energy, I’ll just go back over some previous sketchbook exercises and add watercolor washes.
- color studies. When I really want to dive into color, I like doing color studies. Not only are color studies beautiful to me, but they give me a chance to explore my colors, color palette, mediums, and to find the mixing capabilities of a specific color or an entire palette.
- mark making. Mark making is an exercise that can help you learn your tools and what kind of marks they are capable of making, but they can also help you learn how to create certain sketching and painting techniques like cross-hatching.
- one subject four ways. Try sketching one subject at least two different ways, but you can increase that number to four or more. Draw the item from different views, with different lighting, in different mediums.

- A Houseplant. A houseplant always makes a good subject for drawing. By drawing a houseplant, you can combine natural features with some solid elements such as you can draw a potted plant having some light effects on it.
- A Pair of Shoes. Open your closet and find an ordinary item in it. That’s a pair of shoes, go and draw it. You can go for a pair of shoes that fit a businessman or you can draw your favorite sneakers.
- Sketch the Shape of Clouds and Sky. One of the simplest sketchbook ideas is to sketch the shape of the cloud and sky. You can draw a sunny sky, a starry sky or clouds.
- Kitchen Utensils. Want to get some drawing inspiration? Go to your kitchen, get some utensils, toss them on a table, and draw them as they land. As you cook with adventures, similarly add some fun in your drawings by sketching kitchen utensils.
- A City Skyline. If you are a country lover, drawing a city skyline is a great idea for you. Most people think that a city skyline is a bit complex to draw but the fact is it is quite simple and easy to draw a skyline.
- Cats and Dogs. If you have a cat or a dog in your house, draw them. In case you do not have a fuzzy animal with you, do a quick search on Google, and make a drawing.
- An Open Book. If you are not interested in drawing a stack of books, take one book, open it, and make a drawing on it from different angles.
- A Piece of Jewelry. Another sketching idea that you can try is to draw a piece of jewelry. Open your jewelry box, take out a ring, a necklace or a bracelet, and draw it.
- Draw a Towel in Different Positions. One of the simplest sketchbook ideas is to draw a towel in different positions. You can draw a hanging towel or a crumpled towel as you want.
