GRANDMA'S THANKSGIVING SWEET POTATO YAMS
This is an EASY recipe that my grandmother used to make. This is one of my favorites of hers. I don't like sweet potatoes, but I love these. I got the recipe from a friend of hers (she has passed) and decided to share. It's delicious and a sweet treat.

TRADITIONAL THANKSGIVING SWEET POTATOES.
These are the sweet potatoes that we had at every Thanksgiving when I was growing up, and I have carried on the tradition of making this recipe each year, and now my daughters want to make them for their families. The amount of ingredients may vary, if the potatoes begin to get too brown, add more oj and Karo and butter. Keep...

Steps:
- 1. Wash and peel the sweet potatoes. Slice into 3/4 inch rounds. Combine 4 tsp cinnamon with 3/4 cup brown sugar, set aside.
- 2. Melt half the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add 1/2 the Karo syrup, 1/2 cup of orange juice, and the cinnamon/brown sugar mixture to the pan. Add the potatoes in a single layer, cook , turning once, until golden brown around the edges and soft in the middle. Continue cooking layers of potatoes until all are cooked.
- 3. Place all cooked potatoes in a large buttered casserole dish with lots of surface area. Bake at 350 for 20-30 minutes. Remove them from the oven and top with the mini-marshmallows, place back in the oven and don't shut the door completely and don't even think about walking away. When marshmallows begin to get nicely browned on top (which will happen in the blink of an eye), remove casserole from the oven. Done!

- Hasselback Sweet Potatoes. Grab an extra-sharp knife to create these fancy-feeling Hasselback sweet potatoes. Though admittedly more labor-intensive than tossing whole potatoes into the oven, Hasselback sweet potatoes are impressive in presentation and extraordinary in their texture.
- Sweet Potato Soufflé. If you’re looking for a recipe that feels familiar yet a little different, try this sweet potato soufflé. Coconut milk and orange zest add flavorful pizzazz, while the use of a non-wheat flour means you can serve up this treat for gluten-free (and dairy-free) guests.
- Roasted Garlic and Herb Sweet Potatoes. What could be simpler than tossing diced sweet potatoes with garlic, thyme, and olive oil, then roasting to crispy perfection?
- Healthier Thanksgiving Sweet Potato Casserole. It’s easy for classic sweet potato side dishes to tip over into dessert territory. Thankfully, this sweet potato pecan casserole takes the classic concept and gently coaxes it back to the savory side with the use of chili powder and a modest serving of bacon.
- Sweet Potato Wedges. Roasted potato wedges are great for three reasons: 1) They give you baked potato energy without having to commit to throwing a whole potato on your plate.
- Healthy Sweet Potato Gratin. While conventional gratins call for heavy cream and piles of cheese, this healthier version proves you can lighten things up without sacrificing great taste.
- Sweet Potato Gnocchi. Impress friends and family by showing up to Thanksgiving with this pillowy sweet potato gnocchi. The recipe uses the time-honored flavor combination of sage and brown butter, which never fails to pair beautifully with the tender sweetness of a sweet potato.
- Mashed Sweet Potatoes. Mashed potatoes don’t have to be an either/or situation: Feel free to keep the conventional version and add these alongside, or go wild and declare this the year of sweet potato mash only.
- Sweet Potato Latkes. Hanukkah starts just after Thanksgiving this year, so there’s no reason to hold off on the latkes. Crispy shredded sweet potato with onion and garlic?
- Baked Sweet Potato Fries. We’re not going to pretend that fries normally find their way to a traditional Thanksgiving table, but there’s nothing wrong with shaking things up a bit, is there?

- Turkey. No traditional Thanksgiving dinner would be complete without turkey! In fact, in informal conversation, some people refer to Thanksgiving as Turkey Day.
- Stuffing. Stuffing is another one of the most popular Thanksgiving dishes! There are various ways to make it, but it usually consists of finely chopped breadcrumbs, onions, and herbs that are stuffed inside the turkey and cook with the turkey inside of the oven.
- Mashed Potatoes. Mashed potatoes are another staple of any traditional Thanksgiving dinner. They are also very easy to make! White potatoes originally came from South America, and they had not yet made their way to North America in 1621.
- Gravy. Gravy is a brown sauce that we make by adding flour to the juices that come out of the turkey while it is cooking. On Thanksgiving, it is traditional to eat gravy with the turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes.
- Cornbread. Cornbread is one of my favorite Thanksgiving side dishes! It’s a type of bread made from corn flour, and it has a cake-like consistency. You can make it sweet or savory, and it is delicious both ways.
- Rolls. It’s also common to have rolls on Thanksgiving. My family serves both cornbread and rolls, but I only eat the cornbread. At the first Thanksgiving meal, the Pilgrims didn’t have butter or wheat flour, so whatever bread they had would have been made out of corn.
- Sweet Potato Casserole. Another common Thanksgiving food is the sweet potato casserole. It’s served as a side dish, not a dessert, but it is very sweet.
- Butternut Squash. Butternut squash is a typical Thanksgiving food, and it can be prepared in a variety of ways. It has a soft texture and a sweet flavor.
- Jellied Cranberry Sauce. My husband loves some Thanksgiving foods, like turkey and pumpkin pie, but he detests jellied cranberry sauce. He actually calls it an abomination!
- Spiced Apples. Apples are very much an autumn fruit because most apples are harvested between September and November. A traditional Thanksgiving dinner will often feature spiced apples.

- Roasted Sweet Potato and Delicata Squash With Cranberry Agrodolce. Sure, sweet potatoes and squash already have some sweetness. But they're even better dressed up with a few dollops of sweet and sour cranberry sauce in this holiday-ready side.
- Charred Sweet Potatoes With Toum. This recipe is nice twice. The roasting and honey-glazing method is a great way to make sweet potatoes, and you also get an eggless garlic sauce that you’ll use again and again.
- Spiced Sweet Potato and Parsnip Tian. With apple cider, Aleppo pepper, parsnips, and fresh thyme, this pretty dish offers a lighter (and prettier) take on your usual Thanksgiving sweet potato casserole.
- Torn Potatoes of Many Colors With Chile-Lime Butter. Sure, you could use just one kind of potato for this pomegranate-topped side dish, but we love to combine a few.
- Spicy Cornbread Stuffing With Chorizo and Sweet Potatoes. This flavor-packed holiday side feeds a crowd of 20 and takes care of both the stuffing and the sweet potatoes.
- Thanksgiving Dinner for One. All the elements of a classic Thanksgiving feast, conveniently portioned just for one, including your own mini sweet potato casserole.
- 3-Ingredient Sweet Potato Casserole With Maple Pecans. Maple syrup pumps up the flavor of puréed sweet potatoes and provides a sweet glaze for extra-peppery candied pecans in this surprisingly sophisticated Thanksgiving side.
- Farro Salad With Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Red Onion, and Goat Cheese. Skip the sweet potato casserole and instead use your sweet potatoes to make this hearty salad with crisp radishes, caramelized onions, and zingy dressing.
- Sweet Potato Casserole with Graham Cracker Streusel. Embrace the sweetness with this maple-kissed casserole, topped with a playful pecan-graham crumble and toasty marshmallows.
