DOT'S HAM, CABBAGE, AND POTATOES

Dot's Ham, Cabbage, and Potatoes image

This was a recipe my Mom had and we ate it every St. Patrick's Day. An alternative recipe for St. Patrick's Day for those who don't care for corned beef and cabbage. Cooked together in one pot and boy is it juicy! My mom is Irish and hated the traditional corned beef, potatoes, and cabbage version. She got the basis for this recipe from her Italian Mother in Law. Add a nice warm crusty roll, butter, and a pint of Guinness or Pinot Noir and you got yourself a hearty meal to celebrate the Irish!

BLACK FOLKS SOUTHERN CABBAGE RECIPE

Black Folks Southern Cabbage Recipe image

Black folks Southern cabbage recipe is a delicious way to enjoy one of the South's favorite side dishes that's warm and sweet with savory soul food flavors!

Provided by Shaunda Necole

Categories     Side Dish

Time 13m

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 pound cabbage (3-4 pound cabbage, shredded)
1 cup onion (chopped )
1 cup chicken broth (or use vegetable broth to make this dish vegetarian)
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
½ cup butter (unsalted or vegan butter)
½ teaspoon Old Bay seasoning (or Cajun seasoning)
½ teaspoon garlic powder
¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 tablespoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper

Steps:

  • Cut out the cabbage's core and use a food processor or a knife to shred the cabbage leaves. (I remove the outer layer of cabbage leaves first and discard them before chopping.)
  • Add the shredded cabbage and all the ingredients (onion, chicken apple cider vinegar, butter, Old Bay or Cajun seasoning, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper) into the Instant Pot stainless steel inner pot.
  • Sink the chopped cabbage as much as you can into the liquid broth.
  • Close the Instant Pot lid (make sure the valve is up - in the position for sealing) and pressure cook on high for 4 minutes.
  • When the cooking time is finished, allow a natural pressure release for at least 4 minutes.
  • To open the Instant Pot lid, move the valve to 'venting' and manually release any remaining pressure, if applicable.
  • Serve Black folks Southern cabbage recipe warm and enjoy!

~ MY MOM'S TRADITIONAL HAM CABBAGE & POTATO SOUP ...
Dec 30, 2014 - What makes this ethnic, hearty, peasant soup traditional? Every time my mother has a meaty ham bone in her hand, she makes "ham and cabbage". It is a brothy concoction of ham, carrots, celery, onions and potatoes seasoned with nothing but salt and pepper. I grew up loving cabbage and I adore this "boiled dinner". I am Russian Orthodox (Eastern European).
