  • The tannins may reduce your iron absorption. Tannins—the polyphenol compounds that make drinks like tea and wine taste bitter—may inhibit the body's absorption of iron, when consumed in excess (more than 4 cups), according to a study published in Food Research International.
  • You may be exposed to significant levels of toxins. As is the case with almost any food that is cultivated nowadays, tea leaves can contain or absorb various toxic compounds from the soil or through harvesting methods.
  • You may cause liver damage. When researchers tested tea bags versus tea leaves, they found higher levels of fluoride in higher-priced, higher-quality tea bags, according to a Food Research International study.
  • You may feel anxious, have trouble sleeping, or get headaches. Tea contains caffeine. Less than coffee—between 20 and 60 milligrams per cup—but if you're drinking too much tea, that caffeine adds up.
  • Lemon teas may contain higher levels of heavy metals. White, green, black teas with added citric acid may have higher levels of aluminum, cadmium, and lead, according to a study published in the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis.

THESE ARE THE WORST TEAS FOR YOUR HEALTH, EXPERTS SAY

From eatthis.com
Author Sarah Crow

  • Comfrey Tea. "The much-loved tea—considered to have healing properties—contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can lead to severe liver damage," explains Hiba Batool, a nutritionist and nutrition researcher at Marham.
  • Peppermint Tea. If you're drinking peppermint tea on a regular basis, you could be doing inadvertent damage to your health over time. "Too much can be irritating, and, in large amounts, can be toxic," explains Celine Beitchman, director of nutrition at the Institute of Culinary Education.
  • Lemon Tea. That lemon tea in your cabinet could be causing unintended consequences for your oral health, experts say. "Teas with added lemon flavor have higher levels of lead than other teas," says Jay Cowin, a registered nutritionist and director of formulations at ASYSTEM.
  • Black Tea. While a cup of black tea now and again is unlikely to harm you, sipping black tea throughout the day could be setting you up for some unpleasant side effects.
  • Licorice Tea. If you've got high blood pressure, you might want to rethink that cup of licorice tea. "Licorice tea can increase blood pressure, so people on blood pressure medications need to be especially careful," explains Galvin.
