TIP FOR IMPROVING HARSH-TASTING COFFEE

Tip for Improving Harsh-Tasting Coffee image

It happens to everyone -- you try a new brand of coffee that was on sale, your SO brings home the wrong brand, someone gives you the rest of the can after the big event is over, your budget is tight so you had to buy cheap coffee instead of the better brand you normally prefer, ... and you end up with a can of coffee that makes a harsh-tasting, unpleasant brew. But you're too frugal or financially challenged to just pitch it. Here's a way to make it fit to drink. Note -- this will not taste like vanilla coffee. It will only mellow the harshness of the wrong-brand coffee. My DH, who loathes flavored coffees, couldn't taste it at all.

Provided by 3KillerBs

Categories     Beverages

Time 6m

Yield 10-12 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 3

4 -5 tablespoons ground coffee (or whatever you normally use to make one pot)
water
1/8-1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Prepare your coffeemaker with water as usual.
  • Put the coffee into the filter as usual.
  • Drip the vanilla extract over the grounds.
  • Run coffeemaker as usual.
  • Note -- this will not taste like vanilla coffee. It will only mellow the harshness of the wrong-brand coffee. My DH, who loathes flavored coffees, couldn't taste it at all. ;).

6 COFFEE MAKER CLEANING TIPS FOR A BETTER CUP OF JOE ...

From wellandgood.com
Estimated Reading Time 5 mins
  • Only cleaning the carafe... The biggest mistake people make when cleaning their coffee pot is only cleaning the carafe. “You need to clean every removable part and soak it in soapy hot water for 15 minutes,” says Jamie Hickey, a barista and founder of Coffee Semantics.
  • Or not cleaning the carafe enough. Please, don't just rinse out the carafe and call it a day. The carafe contains stains and other mineral content left by used coffee.
  • Not descaling your machine. Descaling basically cleans off excess mineral buildup, coffee oils, and germs and bacteria that build up inside your machine.
  • Cleaning with a metal sponge. Abe Navas, the general manager of Emily's Maids, a house cleaning service in Dallas, Texas, says metal sponges are often used for everything, but if you try to use them for your coffee machine you could scratch it or ruin it.
  • Not cleaning your filters. “Even if you use paper filters, you need to clean where you put them,” Navas says of one of the most important coffee maker cleaning tips.
  • Putting stuff in the dishwasher that doesn't belong there. This is especially true for coffee grinder parts, says Navas. “Some parts of the grinder are dishwasher safe, but not the whole deal, so try to research what you can put in it,” says Navas.

10 TIPS FOR RESPONSIBLE COFFEE CONSUMPTION - EAT DRINK BETTER

From eatdrinkbetter.com
  • Avoid Corporate Coffee – Big coffee brands mass produce coffee, and do not think twice about cutting down trees to create large coffee plantations. Besides, the actual farmers who harvest the actual beans get very little in return for their work.
  • Everything In Moderation… – Since it takes so much water to make just one cup when you consider everything it takes to make, a good first step is to try to simply reduce how much coffee you drink per day.
  • Compost Used Coffee Grounds – If you’re a green thumb, you’ll love this tip (if you don’t already know it). The next time you brew a hot pot of coffee, rather than chucking out the used coffee grounds, toss them in your compost heap, or directly into your garden.
  • Ditch the Pesticides – Instead of using harsh chemicals in your garden to keep away unwanted pests like ants and neighborhood cats, sprinkle coffee grounds and orange peels in your garden.
  • No Need For a Coffee Stirrer – Rather than mixing sugar and cream with a plastic spoon or stirrer, try pouring them into an empty cup. Then gently pour your hot coffee on top, letting the heat naturally dissolve the sugar and mix the cream.
  • Go Local – To reduce the amount of carbon produced by shipping coffee halfway around the world, try buying coffee that has traveled the shortest distance to reach you.
  • Drink Organic – Organic coffee is grown without toxic chemicals, and is grown in such a way that protects sensitive ecosystems and the birds that live within them.
  • Look for Fair Trade Coffee – If you’re going organic, and avoiding corporate coffee, buying fair trade coffee just makes sense. Rainforest Alliance and Transfair coffees not only ensure fair living wages for coffee farmers, they take into account environmental standards in their certification process.
  • Buy a Nice Mug – This one is a no-brainer. But it’s easier if you invest in a really cool mug that you will want to use over and over again; eliminating the need for plastic or Styrofoam cups.
  • Get Re-Usable Filters – To help reduce the amount of paper you use when drinking coffee, it’s a good idea to get a reusable gold coffee filter; not only will it help the environment, but it will improve the taste of your coffee.
