CLASSIC FRENCH TOAST

There are just a few keys to making great French toast: Use stale bread (fresh tends to fall apart), make sure the bread is sliced at least 3/4-inch thick (it helps maximize soaking for a custardy interior) and watch your soaking time (a shorter time equals a slightly drier toast, a longer time yields a more custardy one).

8 slices Texas Toast or other 3/4-inch-sliced white bread
8 large eggs
1 1/2 cups half-and-half
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
4 tablespoons butter
Confectioners' sugar, for serving
Maple syrup, for serving

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Lay the bread slices in one layer (it's OK if they overlap a little) on a baking sheet. Bake the slices (to dry them out a little) for 6 minutes, then flip and bake for 6 minutes more. Set aside to cool. Reduce the oven temperature to 200 degrees F.
  • Whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, granulated sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt in a large casserole dish.
  • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-low to medium heat. Place 2 slices of bread in the egg mixture. Let the bread completely soak in the egg mixture on both sides, about 30 seconds to 1 minute total, checking after 15 seconds. (Bread should feel heavy and soaked through but hold its shape without breaking apart.) Melt a tablespoon of butter in the skillet and add the 2 soaked slices; cook until the outside is golden brown and crisp and the inside is cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes per side. You will need to watch and adjust the temperature between medium and medium-low if the bread is browning too quickly or not browning fast enough. Keep finished French toast slices warm on a rack nested in a rimmed baking sheet in the oven. Repeat with the remaining slices.
  • Serve with a dusting of confectioners' sugar and drizzle of maple syrup.

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 eggs
6 tablespoons half and half
1 tablespoon sugar
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 3/4-inch-thick slices soft-crusted French bread or egg bread
2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter
1/4 cup powdered sugar
Warm maple syrup (optional)

Steps:

  • Beat eggs, half and half, sugar, 2 teaspoons cinnamon and vanilla extract in 13x9x2-inch glass baking dish to blend. Add bread and turn to coat. Cover and chill until bread absorbs egg mixture, at least 30 minutes and up to 1 day.
  • Melt butter in heavy large skillet over medium heat. Add bread and cook until golden and cooked through, about 3 minutes per side. Transfer to plates. Combine powdered sugar with remaining 1 teaspoon cinnamon and sift over toast. Serve with maple syrup, if desired.

This recipe came from my friend, Julie! Easy to make and tastes out of this world!! Must be made in a glass baking dish as a metal pan will overcook it.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
5 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
6 slices bread (any type but I use Texas Toast)

Steps:

  • Beat eggs and milk together and set aside.
  • Melt butter and spread evenly around a 9x13 pan.
  • Sprinkle brown sugar& cinnamon evenly in bottom of pan.
  • Next, stack 2 layers of bread in pan (I only use one layer if using Texas toast).
  • Pour egg & milk mixture over the layered bread. (Can use less of this mixture if you'd like).
  • Bake uncovered for 45 minutes at 350 degrees.
  • NOTE: Can be made the night before and baked the next morning.

1/3 cup milk
1/8 cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon vanilla

Steps:

  • Whisk eggs until frothy.
  • Add all other ingredients except bread. Whisk together well.
  • Heat griddle over medium heat.
  • Dip both sides of bread in egg mixture and place on griddle.
  • Turn after a few minutes.
  • Continue turning until desired doneness is reached.

This is as easy as store bought french toast, but all the healthy ingredients of homemade. I've been making this since the boys were little, all they had to do was pop this in the toaster and bam breakfast was on the table or in had to eat on the mile walk to the bus stop.

4 - eggs, beaten
1 cup(s) milk
2 teaspoon(s) vanilla
1/2 teaspoon(s) ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon(s) nutmeg
8 - slices texas toast

Steps:

  • In a shallow bowl beat together eggs, milk, sugar, vanillaand cinnamon and nutmeg. Dip bread slices into egg mixture, coating both sides.
  • In a skillet or on a griddle melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat; add half of the bread slices and cook for 2 to 3 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Repeat with remaining butter and bread slices. Serve warm.
  • TO FREEZE: place french toast on waxed paper on cookie sheets and place in freezer, when frozen transfer to zip lock freezer bags and when ready to eat place in toaster. I usually triple or more this recipe.

  • Put butter in a microwave safe bowl and microwave in 20 second increments, stirring in between, until melted. Add 1 cup brown sugar and stir until well incorporated Pour into bottom of a greased 9×13 pan, spreading mixture evenly.
  • Lay a single layer of Texas Toast in pan, cutting pieces to fit if needed. Spoon 1 cup of egg mixture evenly over bread. Sprinkle with half of the brown sugar/cinnamon mixture.
