My Grandmother used to make this for my mother when she was a child, and my Mom made it for us, alot. It was requested very often in our household. I now make it for my daughter (and my husband) on a regular basis, at least once every two weeks. It is the ultimate in comfort food. My daughter loves it reheated for breakfast. Hope you all enjoy this age old recipe!

2 (14 1/2 ounce) cans tart red cherries
2 cups water
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon almond oil (optional)
3 cups Bisquick baking mix
1 1/4 cups milk

Steps:

  • In a large dutch oven, combine tart cherries (including the juice), sugar, water, cinnamon and almond oil.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • In the meantime, mix together the Bisquick baking mix and milk.
  • When cherries have come to a boil, drop dumplings into cherry mixture by tablespoonfuls until all the dumpling mixture is used.
  • Lower heat to medium and cook uncovered for 10 minutes, then cover and cook for an additional 10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let stand 20 minutes, covered.

1 can (14-1/2 ounces) pitted tart cherries, undrained
1 cup sugar, divided
1/2 cup water
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest
Dash salt
1/3 cup milk
3 tablespoons butter, melted

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, combine the cherries with juice, 3/4 cup sugar and water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer., Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, lemon zest, salt and remaining sugar. Stir in milk and butter just until moistened., Drop by tablespoonfuls onto simmering cherry mixture. Cover and simmer for 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in a dumpling comes out clean (do not lift the cover while simmering).

3 tablespoons butter
3 eggs, separated
2 cups cheese curd
2 ounces semolina
1 teaspoon chopped lavender
1 tablespoon cream
2 tablespoons flour

Steps:

  • Cream the butter and beat in the yolks 1 at a time. Add the curd, semolina, lavender, cream, flour, and lavender, and let rest for 1 hour, making sure to cover.
  • Bring a medium pot of salted water to boil.
  • Whisk the egg whites until they are stiff and fold into the curd mixture.
  • Using a tablespoon, drop the batter into the water. Boil for 8 minutes.

Homemade dough filled with a sweet cherry filling, boiled and tossed in butter. A classic Ukrainian dessert dish.

2 cups milk
1 egg
1 stick butter/margarine (room temperature)
1 tsp salt
3 cups flour
2 cups flour
Butter
Sour Cream
Sugar
Tart Cherries (canned)

Steps:

  • In a bowl of a mixer fitted with a hook attachment, combine 2 cups milk, 1 egg, 1 stick butter/margarine, 1 tsp salt, and 3 cups of flour. Mix at low speeds until thoroughly combined. Add 2 more cups of flour and knead until a smooth dough, that doesn't stick to the sides of the bowl forms.
  • Let rest for 30 minutes to 1 hour, at room temperature.
  • Drain the cherries from the liquid over a colander.
  • Dust a couple of rimmed baking sheets with flour. Set aside.
  • Once the dough has rested, divide it into 4 equal parts and shape them into balls.
  • Working with one dough ball at a time, roll it out with a rolling-pin until about 2 mm thin, dusting the surface with flour, to keep the dough from sticking to the table. Using a round cookie cutter, cut out circles, as close to each other as possible. Collect all the pieces around the circles and add them to the rest of the dough (keep the dough balls covered between use).
  • Place 2 cherries in the middle of each circle. Working with one circle at a time, fold it in half, keeping the cherries from moistening the edges (this will keep them from forming a seal), and press the two edges together to form a half circle shaped dumpling. Place it onto the dusted baking sheet. Keep working with the rest of the dough circles and then move onto the next dough ball, until all dough and cherries are used.

This old-fashioned dessert is made by simmering fruit with cinnamon dumplings that soak up the sweet syrup as they cook.

2 bags (16 ounces each) frozen dark sweet cherries
1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup whole milk
Ice cream, for serving (optional)

Steps:

  • Combine cherries and 1/3 cup sugar in a large skillet. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-high; simmer rapidly until syrupy, 8 to 10 minutes. In a small bowl, combine cinnamon and remaining tablespoon sugar; set aside.
  • Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, and salt; gradually stir in milk, mixing just until a wet dough forms.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low. Spoon tablespoons of dough (you should have about 18) over simmering fruit; sprinkle all with cinnamon-sugar.
  • Cover skillet; simmer very gently until dumplings are set and dry to the touch, 10 to 12 minutes. Serve warm, with ice cream if desired.

1 can (15 ounces) dark sweet cherries
2 cups water
1/3 cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar, divided
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon cold water

Steps:

  • Drain cherries, reserving juice; set cherries aside. , In large saucepan, combine juice, water, 1/3 cup sugar and cinnamon; bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. , For dumplings, combine the flour, baking powder and remaining sugar in a small bowl. Add milk and oil, stirring just until moistened. Drop by teaspoonfuls into boiling soup. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Dissolve cornstarch in cold water; stir into soup. Add cherries. Bring to a boil; boil for 1-2 minutes. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 3-4 minutes.
