  • Blueberries. These dark-hued berries do more than just add punch and color to a bowl of oatmeal; they might fight cancer, according to recent research. Blueberries may help combat ovarian cancer based on a study by Oncology Letters, which found that the bite-size fruit inhibited the presence of a biomarker for the disease.
  • Walnuts. These nuts have a reputation for being brain food, but that's not the only benefit they tout. Research by Nutrients shows walnuts help lower LDL (or bad) cholesterol while keeping levels of healthier HDL cholesterol constant.
  • Avocado. Those struggling with osteoarthritis may want to consider adding avocado to their diet, according to a recent study by The British Journal of Sports Medicine.
  • Green Tea. Curious what all the buzz on green tea is for? The beverage is loaded with antioxidants and compounds that will do all sorts of good for your body, including reducing your risk of gastric cancer.
  • Pomegranate Juice. Pomegranate juice may play a role in preventing breast cancer, according to this recent study by The University at Albany. When pomegranate juice extract was injected into cancer stem cells, the fruit extract inhibited the cells' ability to multiply and form tumors, leading researchers to believe pomegranate can be exploited in the prevention of breast cancer.
  • Coffee. If you've been trying to cut back on coffee for better health, you may want to rethink your decision. Last summer, a study by Annals of Internal Medicine on the effects of regular coffee consumption indicated that those who drank java had a lower rate of death throughout the three-year period of observation.
  • Strawberries. It's not just blueberries that are a must for healthy eating. Their red-hued counterparts have been shown to slow the progression of aging, thanks to their abundance of polyphenols.
  • Purple Sweet Potatoes. Purple sweet potatoes may be tricky to track down at your local grocery store, but the search is well worth it. The spuds are rich in anthocyanin, a compound that has been shown to reduce the risk of lifestyle-related illnesses, including cancer.
  • Almonds. There's more to glowing skin than facials and exfoliators. A diet rich in Vitamin E and healthy fats will help you glow from the inside out, which is where almonds come into play.
  • Pistachios. Pistachios aren't just fun to eat; they're also your eye's best defense against age-related vision damage, too. The colorful nuts have plentiful amounts of Vitamin E, lutein, and zeaxanthin, all of which are great for keeping your peepers happy.

30 FOODS TO AVOID AFTER TURNING 30 — EAT THIS NOT THAT

From eatthis.com
  • Flavored yogurt. Already cutting back on candy and cookies? Don't assume you're in the clear. Many sources of the sweet stuff are hiding in less obvious places like bread, ketchup, and flavored yogurts.
  • Canned soup. A study published in 2013 found a connection between high blood pressure and skin aging, in which compared to their older-looking counterparts, female study participants with fewer wrinkles also had lower blood pressure.
  • Breakfast pastries. Put your hands behind your head and step away from the Pop-Tarts—and all of those sugary muffins and scones, too. You're a grown-up now; it's time to start eating like one.
  • Charred meat. Grilling is a quick way to whip up a meal and it's obviously a summer staple, but cooking steaks and other proteins at such high temperatures over an open flame can produce heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
  • Soda. If you're thinking about starting a family, consider soft drinks your archenemies. The reason? Soda is laced with potentially cancer-causing dyes and are the primary source of added sugar in the American diet.
  • Oreos. Whether you like Red Velvet Oreos, the Birthday Cake variety, or can't live without the Mega-Stuff, all of Nabisco's twist n' lick cookies have one thing in common: They're filled with empty calories and waist-expanding fat.
  • Cocktails and beer. As we age, the body doesn't metabolize alcohol as efficiently, and drunk junk food cravings become harder to ignore, warns registered dietitian Martha McKittrick.
  • Bagels and white bread. Unless your go-to bagel is made with whole grains, consider it a skip food. Though you may not think of the popular breakfast carb as a sweet indulgence, the body converts refined carbohydrates into sugar and then glucose, a nutrient that damages collagen and other wrinkle-fighting proteins.
  • Chinese takeout. You already know Chinese takeout meals have tons of sodium, but in addition to making you feel thirstier, sodium can also take the moisture out of your skin and raise your blood pressure.
  • Veggie burgers. Finding your first gray hair is a day you'll never forget. It's one of those pesky reminders from Mother Nature that you're a full-blown adult—and an unwelcome one at that.
